Chester-le-Street Golf Club, founded in 1908, is a wonderful parkland course set in the grounds of Lumley Castle (now a top class hotel). The course is generally flat with four minor inclines giving associated uphill and downhill fairways (and some lovely views of the surrounding countryside). Individual trees plus small and large copses are simultaneously major attractions and hazards of the course, and many holes necessitate accurate driving to facilitate a direct shot to the green. However, all greens are 400/450 sq yds in area, so are comparatively large giving all handicap golfers hope of achieving the elusive par or birdie. The modern clubhouse (built in 1997) offers excellent bar, catering and general golfing facilities. Visitos are welcome on all days but with some time restrictions.
