A challenging parkland style course
Goring and Streatley GC is a parkland style course in Streatley on Thames, Berkshire!
The course opened in xxxxx!
The course was designed by Harry Colt!
The course is a par 71 off the white and yellow tees and a par 72 off the ladies red tees!
The SSSs are 71, 70 and 72 respectively!
The course yardages are 6,355, 6,008 and 5,543 respectively!
I/we played off the yellow tees!
The round opens with a short par 4,gentle dogleg right, with 2 pot bunkers each side of the fairway, with a downhill approach shot to a multi-tier green, with back bunkers right and left!
Thereafter, holes 2 - 4 are 3 consecutive seriously uphill holes which are difficult and an ordeal!
The par 3s
The outturn score for the par 3s was +4, ie 2 pars, a bogey and a triple bogey! After allowing 1 shot this was +3 shots too many! All on the same hole, ie the 9th! A bunkered tee shot followed by 3 putts! A blip!
#4: a 127 yards uphill tee shot to a blind green, bunkers front right and left!
#9: 131 yards to a green surrounded by 3 bunkers!
#12: 136 yards, index 18, to a green surrounded by 5 bunkers!
#16: 191 yards, index 10, a long tee shot to a green with bunkers front right and left!
The par 4s
My outturn score for the par 4s was +11, ie 4 pars, 4 bogeys, 2 doubles and a triple bogey!
The par 5s
My outturn score for the 3 par 5s was +4, ie 2 bogeys and a double bogey!
#5: 458 yards, index 11!
#15: 484 yards, index 4! A sweeping left to right to a rectangular shape green! A bogey was a good score!
#17: 509 yards, index 14! A high level tee shot sweeping left to right to a sloping fairway, and an approach to a green with no bunkers, but a steep drop of a few feet to an upwards sloping green!
Weekday visitors green fees are £0000!
I entered their annual Seniors Open Stableford competition! The £0000 entry fee included.....
The post game meal was an excellent ham, egg and chips!
The members were wonderful hosts! The disappointment for them was the low competition entry! Much reduced from previous years!
Possibly the severity of some of the front 9 holes make this a much less attractive proposition for Seniors golfers, especially if the competition clashes with another not too far away!
I'd be very happy to play the course again if using a buggy; but I won't be entering their competition again!
Lovely course, gorgeous views
I've only played here a couple of times, but I'm not sure I know why I haven't made the effort to play here more often.
The fairways are generally fairly accommodating, and the holes are a good mixture of tougher and easier holes. It's certainly not an easy walk, but once you've made the climb to the 5th tee most of the hard walking is behind you. The views as you make your way back to the clubhouse make the climb well worth the effort.
Goring and Streatley is just an excellent place for a round of golf.
First time here - £24 online. Mainly parkland with a handful of downland holes thrown in for good measure. After a straightforward start, holes 2-4 are steeply uphill with good views over the Chiltern Hills. Then follows a long sequence of flattish ground before the 17th (a great hole) brings you back to "sea level" with the 18th inviting a good drive back to the clubhouse. All in super condition. Friendly locals. Nice lounge area. Halfway hut (available twice!). A real good fun challenge. Please leave good time to find it though....!
