nice course but boring

The Essex golf and country club Mmmm. looking forward to playing this..... what a let down.
Food was nice, staff was nice, course was nice..... NICE is the right word not fantastic not rubbish but NICE . Long course very well maintained but i call this a corprate course not a members course. Greens were excellent for October bunkers were good but no real outstanding hole. I will go back again maybe next year but not in a hurry to rush back.
The course was NICE!!!

Championship length ..a real test!

Sometimes playing off the yellows I feel as though I am cheating! Not at the Essex at 6,600 yards this is a proper length test. par 4's well over 400yds par 5's at 550yds you really need to be driving well off the tee.
The Essex has improved vastly in recent years, the fairways were lush and second cuts just about right. The greens were ok, a few were a bit rough but on a hole a very nice set up.
Staff were very friendly and the food was good. The practise facilities are good. All in all for £25 with a choice of meal, I felt it was a smashing deal. So if you want to really test yourself off the tee at a beautiful parkland course? Try the Essex!

Long toughish course for the big hitter

I've played the Essex now a few times but never once ripped it up. The course is a biggy and so are some of the holes. You have to hit 250 of many of the pars fours to get a chance of getting a par. The first and second cut can be penal. Getting a score going out makes it easier as the back nine can be tough.
A few holes are samey but it does have a few gems. But if you want to score well you have to boom it off the tee...simples!
Hotel/club house is ok its based on the top floor, the food is good.

Good test

The first impression you get playing Essex G&CC is how nice the course is. That doesn't really change, but you start to get the feeling that you've played the same holes again after a while as they all look fairly similar.

The holes tend to be fairly long, and while the fairways aren't exactly tight, they's not especially generous either. Miss the fairways and you tend to lose the ball either in trees or water, and don't expect finding your ball in either.

I can't fault the condition of the tees, fairways and greens, which were all really good. The bunkers however, the ones I went into anyway, tended to be hard and with little sand.

There's not a pro shop as you pay at the reception of the country club. The changing rooms are really lovely, and the bar looked really gorgeous too.

Superb challenge

An excellent championship length course, tree lined with lakes. Always in great condition. (There is also a good tough 9-hole pay-as-you-play).

Great course shame about the weather.

Course was very wet with standing water all over the place due to heavy rain over night. Greens were in great condition considering the weather and the fairways though wet were playable. Although long I liked this course a lot, some good par 3s and very long par4s with lots of water to avoid. Will be playing again hopefully in better weather.
Practice facilities are good and we were treated very well in the bar/restaurant by friendly staff.

Nice track, certainly worth playing

Nice interesting course.Considering the amount of rain we have had it was in excellent condition. Very wet underfoot but greens and fairways were extremely good. Long and tight in places which certainly makes you think. Nice welcoming clubhouse, friendly staff and a special Internet price of £57 for a fourball made for a very enjoyable round

Long course suit a big hitter, but be straight or you will be in trouble.

Long course suit a big hitter, but be straight or you will be in trouble. Some tight tree line fairways with water in play, and doglegs. Interesting course, you have to think your way around. Fairways, bunkers & greens were in good condition. Down side No driving net to warm up in. £20 11am Sunday Tee Off..I would come back

Bargain!!!!

This was my first time here and i will definitely be going back. This is a long course, even off the yellows, coupled with the reasonably tight fairways, makes for engaging the brain on a lot of the holes.
Allthough a challenge the course and layout of the holes is very asthetically pleasing and enjoyable.
Considering the time of year the course is in very good condition indeed, fairways fairly dry in comparison to elsewhere, greens are a joy...quick and true.
Couple all this with a green fee of £20 on a Sunday makes for a very happy golfer.

Long but fair.......

This is a long course but relatively flat and is very nicely maintained with good greens. It starts with a long Par 5 dog-leg right hole which sets the tone for the rest of your round. However, beware of the water on a number of the holes as it can catch you out in places. Overall we enjoyed it but allow yourselves time as it took us nearly 5 hours to get round but we did have some high handicappers with us. Good value at £20 each using the Openfairways card and look forward to going back soon!

Essex Golf & Country Club

Played here yesterday in a 3 ball.

I'm currently off 23 and my two partners are 8 & 28 respectively

We all enjoyed a well thought out course on the site of an old military airfield. In fact, there is still a landing strip for light aircraft running alongside the course.

Water plays a major role on this one, with 12 different lakes coming in to play on holes 1,5,6,7,9,10,12,13,14 & 18.

The tee boxes and fairways were in very good condition, there's some harsh rough as well so its best to be as straight as possible.

The greens were excellent with a good consistant roll.

Special mention to the starter who was very friendly and gave lots of useful advice on how to play the first, not that it helped me (scored an 8!!)

For a Sunday it wasn't too busy just a couple of minor hold ups at the par 3's on the back nine

We paid £31 each, plus £3 for a yardage chart which as first time visitors was pretty essential

Overall, definately one I would return to, well worth an hours drive

Member for 10 years!!

I started my golf here and left with a handicap of 4!
Friendly atmosphere with 1 championship course and a 9 hole course which exceedss expectations!
A recommendation!
Used to be called and I think still is known as "the course that drains when it rains."
