Wonderful

West Surrey is a 6,482 yards (whites ) par 71 parkland course near Godalming, Surrey. The SSS is 72. The course was designed by Herbert Fowler in 1910. He is also the creator of the more famous Walton Heath.

The course comprises 4 par 3s, 11 par 4s and 3 par 5s. The par 3s were visually exciting and all greens were guarded by deep pot bunkers. There are 3 very long par 4s, indexes 1, 3 & 5, on the front 9.

The course vistas are stunning on many of the holes. There is plenty of room off most of the tees but wayward shots end in trouble. Fairways are in wonderful condition. Tee boxes are immense and perfectly manicured.

The USGA spec greens were in excellent condition; are generally large and much deeper than appears. Many were multilevelled and were seriously undulating. Tricky!

The course has recently been renovated on 4 holes; ie the 1st; 2nd, 12th and 18th, with more improvements to come. If you haven't played the course before; (which I hadn't); you wouldn't have been able to spot the changes. If only Cherry Lodge had such resources!

Nev and Paul were spot on!

Midweek/weekend visitor green fees are £ 70 / £85 respectively or £50 with a County Card (prebooked). I played the course at a total cost of £45, including coffee, 18 holes and a 2 course carvery lunch, by entering their Seniors Open Competition. Great vfm way to get to play such a great course. Play it if you can!

Stunning location, stunning course

From the moment you step onto the 1st tee you just know you're playing somewhere special. By the time you walk off the 18th you'll be looking to come back to play it all over again. In between you'll play some gorgeous looking holes, most of which have fairly generous fairways, deep bunkers, and wonderful greens.

Favourite holes? I can think of 3 or 4 that could be, the downhill par 5 6th, the tricky par 4 17th, or another downhill par 5 at the 18th. I think I need to go back to make sure though.
