Tight Parkland Course...

Colne Valley Golf and Country Club in Essex is situated just a few miles north of Colchester. It is a traditional parkland layout with tight fairways and plenty of undulations and quirks to keep you on your toes.

On arrival, we were welcomed with a smile and a friendly Pro-shop and all the members we met were helpful and polite, not something afforded in many members' clubs! The clubhouse is clean and airy with a generous patio area overlooking the 9th & 18th Green. Yes, it's a two-pin green.

The course itself has stood up pretty well to the unusual summer heat and the Greenkeepers should be applauded for some very well-kept greens. All were flat and true. Although be aware, there are some tricky borrows to look out for.

Not overly long (5950 off the yellows), you will need to pick your target areas carefully and watch out for some 'hidden' bunkers, which caught out this first-time visitor on many occasions, I think I found 5 in total. However, that will teach me to study the course before playing.

What I enjoyed about this course was SIX Par 3's with the stand-out hole being the pretty197 yards 13th, from a raised tee to a raised Green, don't miss it or you could be looking at a double bogey. And the 17th, 143-yard shot to a bunker-protected green with a 30ft drop tee to Green.

All in all, a great little golf course. One that you will enjoy the more you play it.

Looking forward to going back already!

Established tree lined parkland.

Just a few miles from the main road, easy enough to find and well signposted. A fair amount of car parking space leading to a rather well established club house (featuring an expansive patio).

Course is well designed to take advantage of topography. Some interesting elevation changes and undulations combine with natural hazards to test all skill levels.

An enjoyable challenge and the course was in good condition, tees, fairways and greens already looking well kept in verdant splendour.

A course worth more visits an enjoyable day out.

Lovely course

Beautiful course with some very tight fairways, water hazards on several holes. Well maintained, greens undulating and speedy. Very enjoyable round thanks in no small way to my playing partners, Paul and Lester, thanks lads. I'll be back lol

One of the best

A bit dificult for me that is a good thing, but a great course only down side was very poor bunkers more like balast than sand.

Colne Valley Golf Course. superb!!!!!!!!

This is one of my local courses but have never played here. First impressions lovely clubhouse, a warm welcome from the staff and a beautiful view from the terrace of the 9th and 18th holes as they share a very large undulating green. To the 1st Par 5. lovely opening hole. Then the course winds round the valley with tree lined fairways, beautiful. A few holes are a bit tight off the tee but that adds to the courses appeal. Some wide fairways giving you a chance to give it the big heave ho with the driver. Water comes into play on several holes with the River Colne running thru at the bottom of the valley. The whole course was in excellent condition, especially the greens. You have to ask yourself why are all greens not as good as these are at Earls Colne. I got an internet deal of £40 for a fourball, dont know how! I recommend you have a game here, even if you play it only once you will not be disappointed.
Regards Paul

Not to be missed

Having played Colne Valley more than 20 times I have seen it improve year-on-year to what it is now: a great test of golf in beautiful surroundings, with perfect all-year-round greens, and good value green fees.

Lovely golf course will most definitely play here again if I can

High handicappers watch out, if you go round pulling driver at every chance, this course will bite you on the rear quite hard. Medium handicappers, the same applies :)
Lovely course some holes on the flat, some very sloped , and a test of golf. Go round with someone who has played the course a few times, and take their advice.
We paid £20 for the round and well worth the money, the fairways were lovely, the greens are difficult to read, but roll very pure and at a decent pace.
The staff were extremely nice and friendly. And the breakfast even though £7 was well cooked and they even swapped the beans for another sausage :)
Service was excellent before and after the round.
P.S. I'm a mid handicapper, and I didn't listen to most of the advice,,, the course bit me, chewed me up a bit, then spat me out. Next time a little course knowledge from this time, will do wonders for my scoring

One I'd always wanted to play

Always wanted to play Colne Valley, so was really looking forward to the round. Unfortunately we picked one of the wettest August days on record. It poured and I mean poured until the 12th, then eased but the fairways and greens were soaking, so not my best round. When we got in the club house was all locked up with some of my friends clothes in the locker rooms. The owner turned up after a phone call and openned up! We got a free round of drinks, but it was not very good PR.
I will return but on a dryer day!!

Like the name suggest the course is in a valley.

Mature tree lined parkland course with undulating greens & striped fairways (some tight) with fairway bunkers & water hazards and deep green side bunkers.
The green, fairways & bunkers all were in good condition.
Some tees are close to greens, and a public footpath runs through to centre of the course.
Value basic on internet price £12@ Sunday (Nov 2014) Pricy at £35.
You will find practise chipping/ putting green, driving nets & friendly staff.
Overall a good challenge, definitely worth playing, I would come back.
ps Could have temp greens in the winter?
