Tom Simpson,a famous golf architect of the 1920's was commissioned to design the new course. And what a superb job he made of it creating two nine-hole loops around a new club house built by the Town: the first nine through the valleys of the neighbouring forest (20,000 trees were cut down and uprooted in the process) and the second ongentlyundulatingheath land.
No time was wasted in getting on with the job, and on the 2nd of July 1930 an exhibition match between the pride of England; Henry Cotton and Archie Compston and the French pair ; Auguste Boyer and Arnaud Massy took place to inaugurate the course. They achieved the feat of beating par on a course that was only three years old!
At that time the course measured 6206 yards (5675meters)for a par of 74. Further changes were made in the eighties and today's course measures 6605 yards(6040 meters)for a par of 72.
