DESCRIPTION:

The magnificent Château des Vigiers forms the centrepiece of a spectacular 27 hole golf course designed by Donald Steel who is considered one of the very best "natural" golf course architects.

The original 18 hole golf course, with the 9th and 18th finishing in front of the chateau, was opened in 1991 and is set amidst plum orchards, oak woods, lakes and vineyards.

In 2008 a further 9 hole course was added, also designed by Donald, to integrate beautifully into the existing 18 holes to form three 9 hole loops enabling three diifferent 18 hole combinations.

Always maintained to an excellent standard, the courses are maintained with short rough, promoting quick play and accessibility for higher handicaps whilst still offering a challenge to lower hadicappers.

Vigiers - a personal view

Chateau des Vigiers is set in a fantastic location with 3 loops of 9 holes. The original 18 hole course was the Vignes and the Lac and showpieced 2 feature holes, the ninth on the Vignes and 9th on the Lac, both of which head the golfer back towards the hotel and restaurants/bars, and both are tough par 4's as indicated by their stroke indexes of 1 and 2. The new nine, the valley, has 2 long par 5's in the first 4 holes, the first of which will develop into a cracking test with OB on the left and a lake on the right to trap and to tempt anyone trying to reach the green in 2. Vigier's green fees range from 55 to 80 euros depending on the time of year and tee time. Trolley, club and buggy hire is a bit on the expensive side also at 18, 35 and 45 euros respectively (especially with current exchange rates). Food and drink is also a bit pricey but on the whole good quality. If you are holidaying in the Southern Dordogne, Vigiers is well worth a visit and you will find a varied mix of local and international members to hook up with for a round. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Vigiers is a resort golf course , not a traditional golf club and with the addition of the new hotel complex and the extra 9 holes, does provide a memorable golfing experience.
With a bit more attention to the quality of the course, especially the bunkers (which in the writer's opinion need a lot of attention and daily raking) Vigiers would rank as one of the top clubs in the Dordogne.
