Castelgandlfo Golf Club is situated at the foot of the fortress of Castelgandolfo, where the hill slopes gently towards the plain and the coast of Anzio and Nettuno, there was a singular extension of cultivated land.Practically a casket of vegetable gardens and orchards gathered in the area of ??an ancient volcanic crater within which a lake had formed, dried up in the imperial era.
To obtain that result, the hydraulic engineers of ancient Romecreated a network of tunnels and pipelines still in operation which connect the area with the water outlets of the lake of Castelgandolfo.
Thus they obtained the double result of replacing a marshy and unhealthy area with a very fertile extension.
The golf course was born here, the eighteen holes were designed by Robert Trent Jones respecting the basin of the crater and inserting the fairways in the frame of very rich vegetation in which centuries-old Mediterranean olive trees and pines alternate with vineyards, cypresses, mimosas, citrus fruits, rose bushes.
The Clubhouse was created in the villa that Flavio Chigi, Cardinal in Sassia and nephew of Pope Alexander VII had built to house - the customs of the time allowed - a famous beauty known as "la Pavona". The name remained with the villa and the locality.
