An excellent golf course

East Berkshire GC is a par 69 tree lined heathland style course in Crowthorne Berkshire.
I played the yellow tees which has an SSS of 70. There are 4 par 3s, 13 par 4s and only 1 par 5.
It is a relatively short course. The difficulty is provided by the many doglegs, the long grass areas, the gorse, deep bunkers, ditches and tall pine trees.

Wayward shots either result in lost balls or unplayable lies.

Played in July the fairways were in a very dry but good condition. However the greens were in excellent lush condition.

The usual weekday visitors green fee is £ 67; or £40 with a County Card. I played the course by entering the club's Seniors Open Stableford Competition. The entry fee was £ 42, including coffee and bacon roll, 18 holes, water and fruit on course, a two course meal, coffee and prizes. The first prize was a £200 M&S voucher; 38 points. A great vfm way to get to play such a course.

Personally I played 15 good / excellent holes but triple bogey blobbed on 3 holes, including 5 of the tee on my last hole (6th).

The staff at the club, proshop and members organising the competition were excellent hosts.

This is a visually beautiful and excellent challenge. Play it if a vfm chance beckons.

A lesser known Surrey/Berks delight

EBGC was founded in 1903 and is amongst the plethora of beautiful courses around the Surrey/Berkshire boundary. You are greeted by a welcoming entrance/clubhouse which leads you onto a fine/friendly course. The yardage (yellows 6000) is shortish but narrow tree lined fairways, plentiful heather and clever bunkering makes for a good test - the par 3 holes are particularly memorable, especially the 5th which is protected by a ditch to the front and left and a hungry bunker to the right. Conditioning was excellent notwithstanding evidence of recent flooding (course closed the previous day). The Seniors Open was excellent value at £34 - standard green fees are more pricey. I will return next year - hopefully it will be a little drier!
