DESCRIPTION:

Founded in 1896, Lewes Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 71 course situated high on the South Downs, offering stunning panoramic views over the historic town of Lewes and the surrounding Sussex countryside. The course, which spans 130 acres, is characterised by its rolling fairways, natural downland contours, and fast, true greens. The elevated position of the course means that wind can often play a significant role, adding an extra challenge for golfers. The 14th hole, a long par 5, provides breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and requires a precise approach to avoid the well-placed bunkers.

Located near the A27, the club is easily accessible from Brighton and other nearby towns. The medieval town of Lewes, known for its castle and charming streets, is a stone’s throw away and offers plenty to explore for visitors.

lovely course with great views

Getting to the course is a bit tight up a very winding road, but when you get to the club house it all opens up. A small driving range and a putting area with a chipping area to. Nice club house with very nice staff,a very helpful pro-shop to.
The course winds up and down the south downs with views over to seaford and also Ringmer.
Lots of short par 4`s but don't be put off by this as they are mostly blind shots or downhill shots to a small green. Lots of times the ball is below your feet so you need to be good at this.
Accuracy is a real benefit.
The greens were good not to fast but not slow. some of the greens have tiers so getting on the right level is important.
Nice course and would definitely play here again.

NIce course, funny layout

Played Lewes as a winter course, having not played before, the hope was to find somewhere dry during this unseasonably rubbish weather we are having. Job done! It did everything it had to. No soggy patches, well drained, and it didn't even rain.

Basically it's a nice course, interesting holes, if a little confusingly laid out. Just a little unsure where the next tees where each time. Not a major thing but a little frustrating. I have no doubt on a second visit, you wouldn't even notice.

Unfortunately, no rain and no sogginess couldn't stop the wind. 40mph winds, on top of a cliff makes for a very cold, near links style round of golf. That said, in warmer conditions that would make for a fun game. Can't really blame the course.

They do appear to be doing a fair amount of remedial repair work, so while the greens ran true, there was rough ground around a fair number of greens. Pitch on, no a problem but if, like me you like to use your putter at every opportunity, then could cause an issue. That said, when better than winter to do repair work.

Nice course, give it a go!

Hilly, breezy, challenging but slightly expensive.

Lewes offers some spectacular views and is generally in very good condition. Several greens are on the small side, so a degree of luck is involved with the approach shots having to be bumped down a slope. Quite hilly, and difficult to navigate the first time with blind shots and doglegs - maps on the tees would help in this regard. I will play there again sometime, but feel that £23 with a 2 for 1 isn't great value for money.

Ancient & challenging..breathtaking scenery, once you found the way to Chapel Hill

Once you have battled your way to Lewes Golf Course (some GPS can be erratic), you will be enthrawlled by spectacular views, you will truly be immersed in nature, you will have a 116 year old golf course giving you a wonderful golf challenge never to be forgotten.

This is a tough course, a very good test for all golfing capabilities, not manicured but the natural landscape gives it its structure, dips, mounds, uphill/ downhill, sloping fairways, some fairly wide, the greens are superb in their shapes/forms & condition. Local knowledge is certainly an advantage as there are lots of blind spots, not knowing what to expect, not knowing the green's ondulation etc...

The course is very well drained as built on chalk, superb natural vegetation & old trees/little forests adding charm & challenge, the views are spectacular: historic Lewes town, the river Ouze, South Downs,Susex Weald, one can see walkers, some sheeps grazing, even a black sheep in adjacent fields, all OOB.

The signage could be improved, there are some criss cross holes and some Par 3s where one has to take care of other golfers teeing off nearby etc. I particularly liked the Par 3s, but the whole course is very, interesting & a 2nd visit will be welcome, but I prefer to wait the sunnier weather as I could well imagine the rain/ wind would make it somewhat less exhilirating.

The Clubhouse is of timber construction, and the layout of the bar, dining room make use of the spectacular views. Lovely terrace as well. The office & bar staff are most welcoming. The service is excellent, so is value for money.

TheProShop is housed in a timber building too. Well stocked and polite service. Nice changing rooms. Very good practice facilities. Adequate parking once you coped with Chapel Hill steep single lane climb (1/4) to the golf course.

Today,(Monday 10th December) was a "Christmas Turkey Shoot", a customary event where some 40 people took part. A very nice mixed crowd, ex-colleagues of TSGer Vince N. who had extended his invite to Adam W. and myself. We had a superb Chrismtas meal. one of the best I had at a golf venue. We all won a prize, whether top or bottom of the Leaderboard, & this was done in reverse order, so the golfer with the least points had 1st choice of nicely wrapped presents. A lovely course & a memorable Christmas game, hope I can join next year's.

THE END......

Up in the gods!

The first challenge of Lewes Golf Course is the extremely steep & narrow driveway to negotiate which leads to the top of the hill and the clubhouse. Its worth it - there are stunning views at the top!

A lukewarm greeting awaited me at the pro-shop, but nevertheless I paid my fee to the slightly disinterested pro and my way to the first tee.

The first is a medium length Par 4 with a wide fairway but a tricky green, and this pretty much set the theme for the rest of the holes. There is some truly stunning scenery up the top with the 8th providing 360 degree views!

All in all a good course, and and enjoyable day out. I'm not sure if I would want to be playing this course on a cold, wet windy day in December. There is no protection form the elements whatsoever!

Gorgeous views

The climb up the single lane road to Lewes GC is one that's well worth taking, because at the top is a golf course with some of the best views in the country. In my humble opinion anyway. The course itself is worth playing on its own merits however, although be prepared for a fair amount of climbing uphill. The fairways are generally fairly generous, but when the wind blows I imagine that you will be grateful for that. The clubhouse was very warm and welcoming, and we were especially thankful for the woman behind the bar who made us sandwiches, even though food wouldn't normally be served at the time we arrived back. Highly recommended!

Worth playing.

Some stunning views - with the wind it made course tough and play long.

Unfortunately greens had been sanded that week so made putting difficult - would have given it a 4 but for the greens. They did give us a £10 discount each.

Practice areas were good - putting, chipping, bunker area and driving range.

Clubhouse pleasent and friendly staff.

great views nice course

I found Lewes a very friendly course everyone made us feel welcome, the course was in good condition for this time of year, I did feel that lack of directional markers to the next tee, it was easy to play the wrong Hole, Also there are a number of footpaths that cross the course so you have to be aware of walkers. Played it on a very windy day , but will defiantly go back and play it again in the summer
