DESCRIPTION:

Steeped in history and tradition, Chingford Golf Course is one of London’s oldest public courses, originally established in 1888. Situated in the stunning surroundings of Epping Forest, the course provides a beautiful and serene backdrop just minutes from central London, offering golfers a unique mix of nature and convenience. Designed by Tom Dunn, the 18-hole, par 71 course stretches just under 6,000 yards, featuring undulating fairways, mature trees, and strategic bunkers that require careful play and precision. The course is flat, making it a comfortable walk for golfers, yet the variety of hole designs ensures no two rounds feel the same. Close to major roads like the A406 and M11, Chingford Golf Course is easily accessible, making it a popular choice for both locals and visitors. The nearby Royal Epping Forest adds to the area’s charm, and the club’s friendly atmosphere, alongside its well-maintained greens, makes Chingford a must-visit for those looking for a classic and affordable golfing experience.

Carved in Epping Forest mature tree line parkland course with tight fairways.

Carved in Epping Forest mature tree line parkland course with tight fairways. So course management comes into play. Undulating hilly fairway with not many hazards what I could see? Fairway and greens were in good condition. The greens were quick with subtle brakes. Bunkers looked hard. Would recommend and at £15 mid-week great valve

Can’t go wrong for the money

It’s a really good public course, lots of members of the public walking around there, but great value.

Lovely course and value for money

Chingford golf course is a parkland course that shares tee times with the Royal Epping Golf Course but it is not overbooked and allows for a leisurely round.
The course has many challenges of undulations, dog legs, tight fairways and well positioned tress!!
A good mix of long and short holes and the greens are extremely slick.
As the course is parkland you will share it with dog walkers who are generally understanding of flying golf balls but just show caution.
The course is in good condition and the club house has a very tasty cafe.
Would highly recommend this course and great value for money.

Great value for money

Great value for money, lovely surroundings weaving through Epping Forrest. Some testing holes needing ability to draw and fade balls. Misplaced shots can be harshly punished. Great variety of holes.

Nice course even when very wet

A short course with enough challenges to keep you interested. Although very wet the fairways were decent and the greens were excellent. A nice cafe to get some decent food and hot drinks. At £14 great value for money

Well worth a visit

Great as always, course recovering from harsh summer. Good to see groundsmen doing lots of work.

Pleasantly surprised

Enjoyed the course never having played it before.Always thought it to be a bit rough and boring. Although not the best course around it is well worth a visit and value for money. Will play again soon I hope.

Testing

Having played here a couple of times before ,particularly during the really hot weather, the rain has certainly helped, its a little more lush now but still most balls roll for miles if hit in the right spot. Quite a testing course but a good challange. The par 3 3rd? Just wow, one of my playing partners missed his par put by 1 inch on the low side and ball turned 90 degrees and off the green, his next was a foot short and rolled back off the green. My bogey put was 6 inchs long and rolled back into the hole, funny but ridiculous.

Nice well established course

From their web page: Chingford Golf Course was originally established in 1888 as the Royal Epping Forest Golf Club (REFGC)..... A later 1920s redesign is attributed to James Braid.

The REFGC still exists and their clubhouse overlooks the 1st tee and 18th green. But for us TSGers the pro shop, cafe and carpark are across the road, which is fine. The tees were somewhat worn and bumpy but overall the course was in good condition. Even with 12 par 4's there is a good variety of holes. I suspect some of the big-hitters will be a bit disappointed - so long as they stay accurate :-)

I didn't notice any practice facilities or use the cafe. Staff in pro shop were friendly and helpful. I'll happily play there again.

It is public space, so there will be dog walkers, non-dog walkers, cyclists etc. about. But they seem friendly enough and keep to footpaths. Just be aware.

established parkland course

Although the course suffered from a lot if recent rain, the general condition of this course was OK, just a fair amount of muddy bits. An interesting layout, elevation changes, hazards and dog walkers abound. There are some feature holes here, greens are slick and tricky and in the wind this course is a challenge. There is a members clubhouse, we have been invited from time to time but our usual meeting place is the old cafe, adjacent to adequate parking. T'is OK to set up gear and golf shoes are acceptable in the cafe. Food is good, service with a smile although not inexpensive.

Dog walkers and strollers make a welcoming distraction from time to time and locals are generally friendly enough, some even help to locate errant balls...

In short, deals can be had here, all you have to do is ask.

This is a place to see more than once...
