Fabulous views, great course!

Parkland course in excellent condition. Some tight fairways but generally all playable even at my handicap. Greens were good with a lot of thought required. Clubhouse and changing facilities were good.

A very good golf challenge, recommended

Effingham GC is a par 71 members club in the village of Effingham near Leatherhead, Surrey. It is in the North Downs.

The course was established in the 1920s by Harry S Colt. the course is 6,597 yards from the white tees and 6,165 from the yellows. I/we played the yellows. The are 4 par 3s, 11 par 4s and 3 par 5s. There is a halfway house located between the 1st and 8th greens.

The course is in immaculate condition, bunkers are numerous through the fairways and surround most of the greens. Fairways are generous on most holes. The bunkers are deep and filled with good quality grey coloured sand, reminiscent of the bunkers at Hindhead and Blackmoor. There are many elevation changes.

The course is currently two thirds through a course remodeling job with 12 of the 18 holes completed. Mackenzie & Ebert are the noted course architects overseeing the design work The remaining six holes are planned to be done through the winter of 2017 and spring of 2018. There are no course planners available whilst the work is ongoing. Make sure that your GPS for the course is up to date because the yardages for a few of the holes had changed.

Midweek visitor green fees are £47 or £32 with a County Card.Higher rates apply to Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. By entering their annual Seniors Open Stableford Competition my entry fee was £43 including coffee, 18 holes, a two course meal, coffee and prizes. An excellent VFM way to get to play such a good course and meet new players from other courses.

This is a very enjoyable course to play. The index 2 par 4 5th and index 3 par 4 10th hole, and index 1 par 4 12th holes are long for us mid hitters and strategically challenging due to the bunkering as well as their length. The par 3s are a joy. The scorecard indicates that the club operates a convoluted schedule of tee times for the 1st and 10th tees depending on whether 2 balls, foursomes, 3 balls or 4 balls are playing.

The club members and staff were marvelous hosts for our seniors competition. Catering was excellent. I hope to play this course again soon if not in next years competition. I think TSGers will enjoy this course.

Lovely course

Paying a lot more for my round than I usually would, £30 for a twilight time, I had high hopes for Effingham. Perhaps because of that added expectation, Effingham didn't quite hit the mark for me.

That's not to say that this isn't a lovely course, because it really is. The are some very pretty looking holes, especially on the back 9, and the views towards London are exceptional.

The fairways are generally pretty wide, which is good because when you leave the fairway there's some pretty mean rough. The greens were very smooth and ran fairly well, although as a group we felt that the speeds between greens were fairly inconsistent. Again, maybe that's us being a little picky given the cost.

Would I go back? I probably would, although I am certain there are better courses for the money.

Well maintained and interesting

A course I have been wanting to play for a while, but a little pricey for my usual weekend game. Managed to get the chance via company day out and glad I went, despite the erratic weather! Lot's of interesting and challenging holes, lovely true greens, and generally well maintained. Clubhouse with character, worth a visit in my opinion.
