Bunkers, Bunkers and more Bunkers!

Copt Heath boasts on being consistently voted in one of the top 100 golf courses in the UK. It certainly has one of the best club houses. Choice of soaps in the toilets along with your own flannel, and of course towel is a nice touch.
Though I never found an accessible toilet though... I do think they had one? Staff and members were very friendly, well to me at least.
I was playing in an event that gained me a free day of golf. The normal green fee is over a £100 (£60 with a county card), I also had a free buggy, not sure what the cost would be for one of them?
Practice facilities were a bit sparse, two driving nets and a large practice green.
I knew the course would be tough as it has been used as an Open qualifier, and players such as Justin Rose and Lee Westwood, are frequent visitors.
The course also sports a 100 bunkers, and not small shell scrapings... huge six foot deep monsters. All the fairways camber towards these beast. One joyous hole has nine of the brutes! Yes Nine!! The greens were half way through scarification, which was so disappointing as I was looking forward to their famous speed, but alas putting on them was a lottery as it is on all aeriated greens. I liked the layout, I would describe as parkland but with very narrow fairways. The rough was not too penile it was the bunkers that did the damage. (I visited 12 and got out of all but one) The fairway bunkers were so deep, you had no option other than wedge out to the side, as they're were often four bunkers in a line.
If you are thinking of playing here, practice your bunker technique, because you will be visiting the sand! Which to be fair is soft and fluffy.
At a little over 6100 yards off the yellows it is not overly long, but its tight, any wayward drive is severely punished. There's a half way house at hole ten with a toilet block, it was not serving drinks on the day I played.
The food in the club house was excellent, but as I said earlier I was not paying for it. Would I play it again, yes most definitely, would I pay a £100...definitely not.

Historic but divides opinion

Ranked 89th in England in my 2007/8 guide this was a gentle warm down after my previous day at RL&SA. Designed by Vardon and Colt in 1907 the course is a traditional parkland layout regularly being used as an Open Qualifying venue and hosting the annual Peter McEvoy Trophy (which has seen winners such as Justin Rose and Lee Westwood). Whilst it is very pleasant, to my mind it is no more than that - reviewers elsewhere seem to agree with me although there are others who rate it very highly. Currently the fairways are in very poor condition, although an irrigation system is now being installed - greens and bunkers are fine. Winter tees are in operation (the main tees are literally lush!)for which I received a £5 discount down to £40 - £30 would have been fairer. Lovely clubhouse with extensive patio and veranda overlooking 18th green - always a plus for me.
