A good challenge - recommended

West Waterford is a beautiful par 72 parkland course on the outskirts of Dungarvan County Waterford.

The course was designed by Eddie Hackett.

There are challenging drives and the greens are well guarded by greenside bunkers.

I played the course during May time and the Irish summer hadn't yet arrived so the course wasn't as firm as a London area course would have been for the time of year
I entered an "open Stableford Competition" for an entry fee of only 15 Euro (golf only); this was great vfm and. Regular weekly/monthly open Competitions are common practice in Ireland and overseas entries are very welcome. This can be a cheap way of getting to play good courses. I was able to enter some competitions online from the UK before travelling but a simple call to or into the pro shop can also be fruitful in terms of sorting out playing times and partners.
Hospitality provided by pro shop and bar staff and members was excellent.

West Waterford GC is a beautiful parkland golf course just outside the town of Dungarvan in County Waterford close to the Irish Sea.

The course is beautifully laid out par 72 conventionally structured in terms of par 3s (4), par 4s (10) and par 5s (4); contains challenging drives and cross fairway ditches on several holes and some water features. The greens were undulating and well protected by greenside bunkers.

The course was played in May during a rainy period and therefore the fairways were not cut as tight as you would experence in the London/SE region; consequently the course played longer than the card yardages in conjunction with strongish windy conditions. The greens were slightly longer than ideal.

I played in an Open Stableford Competion with a visitors green fee of 15 Euros and it was therefore excellent VFM. I entered this online in the UK before travelling to Ireland.

Open competitions are a regular feature of the Irish golf club scene and whilst they ask for official golf club handicaps on entering I was not asked to produce my certificate though if I had been in contention for a 'visitor' prize I may have been asked to produce it.

Hospitality in the bar and pro-shop was excellent.
