DESCRIPTION:

Founded in 1890, Berkhamsted Golf Club offers a historic, natural layout that eschews sand bunkers, focusing instead on gorse, bracken, and undulating terrain to challenge golfers. Designed by the prominent course architect James Braid, this par 71, 6,600-yard course sits near the Chiltern Hills, just off the A41. The club is renowned for hosting prestigious events such as the Berkhamsted Trophy, a major amateur competition that has seen many notable players grace its fairways.

The proximity to Berkhamsted Castle and Ashridge Estate enhances its appeal, combining historical charm with modern golfing standards. The club remains a favourite for both competitive and recreational golfers.

Leave driver and sand wedge at home

With no bunkers and run-out at 230-260 on nearly every par 4, this is a course for plotting your way round. No wonder Luke Donald won the Berkhamsted Trophy here as an amateur. Even the par 5s have a narrow neck in the fairway at driving distance. If you can hit the fairway about 220 yds off each tee, you'll be well on the way to a good score. Bumps and mounds protect the greens and the fairway lies range from lush to hard, so there is a bit of luck involved too. Also watch out for dog-walkers, runners, cyclists etc on this attractive heathland course.
