Great little track

Played here for the infantry in a match against the Royal Engineers. A great little course but a very challenging one. Definitely you need to think your way round this course and not just use the driver on every par 4 and 5. Nice clubhouse no friendly staff. Well looked after by all.

Definitely worth a visit if you are in that area.

An excellent golf course

Newbury & Crookham GC is a woodland / parkland style course located between Greenham Common (of Usaf fame ) and Newbury Racecourse, in Berkshire.

The club was founded in 1923 and was designed by John H Turner. The original Newbury (& District ) course amalgamated in 1946 with Crookham GC to form the now 18 holes course.

The 1st, 14th & 15th fairways were used by the MoD during the war years.

The course is a par 69 comprising 5 par 3s, 11 par 4s and 2 par 5s.

The course fairways and greens were in excellent condition.

Visitor green fees are £ 40 or £29 as a members guest. I played the course by entering their Seniors Open Stableford Competition. The entry fee of £35 included coffee & a rasher bap; 18 holes and a 2 course meal. Excellent vfm.

Therewas a good welcome to the club from members and club officials.

The catering was excellent!

This is a really good / enjoyable course which I think fellow TSGers would enjoy.

Excellent all round

This is a course that ticks all of the boxes, whether you're looking for smooth running greens, perfect tees, well kept fairways, scenery, and gorgeous looking holes, Newbury & Crookham has it all. The course isn't long, but it isn't easy to score well here, especially if you find yourself in one of the deep bunkers dotted around the course. There are a few narrow fairways, but generally there's a bit of room before you lose your ball in the trees.

There are a number of nice holes here, but I especially liked a lot of the par 3's.

Away from the course, the clubhouse isn't the biggest one you'll ever visit, but the changing rooms and showers are like an Ikea showroom. The pro shop is huge, and the practise areas look very tidy.

This was my first round here, and I am hoping a return visit will be in my very near future.

AN INTERESTING CHALLENGE

Played in their Open today - my first visit to this club. I found the course very enjoyable with changes in elevation and testing greens being the main features. Although relatively short, it is far from easy, particularly if you get the wrong side of the pins. An interesting challenge and one that I look forward to taking on again in 12 months time. A very good Sausage Bap!
