A vast open Parkland course (designed by Jonathan Grant) tough, challenging, enjoyable, my kind of course & today (Tuesday 8th Jan 2013) we had the course to ourselves, well nearly as we shared it with the kites & the geese (& the noisy train line Reading to the West Country: the only drawback on such a beautiful setting)
Wokefield Park is part of the large De Vere Group where style & luxury goes hand in hand but it is not oppressive. There are 2 hotels of a totally different style: ultra modern & traditional. Health & Fitness facility and the Golf Course.
Elevated Tees, wide fairways, old mature trees, mainly oak, streams and 9 lakes, lots of wide/deep/huge bunkers nicely filled with soft sand (only a few had little standing water), all of the above providing a very interesting layout, lots of walking but not strenuous, lot of thinking to plot your way safely to the greens that were in good condition despite the "spiking" holes/marks. The shapes of the greens had interest. Fairways were sloping at times, some tight dog legs with lakes either side. All very challenging but enjoyable, not too manicured, the rough could penalise the errand shots. there were a few wet patches but nothing too significant considering the recent weather.
Signage could be improved as for a first timer, one still had to carefully look for the way forward, the same in the large car parks as you enter the property.
An attractive halfway hut but today it was closed. Clubhouse/Bar is modern & inviting, food is good, cannot remember the prices. Free coffe/tea upstairs. Proshop friendly with good stock but no Ladies clothing. Excellent practice facilites but did not use them. Crazy golf for children and an adventure/climbing enclosure for grown up or children alike. A nice feel about the place.
Lovely balcony overlooking the 10th & 18th hole & the outside patio area which is extremely smart with good quality wooden garden furniture. It must be a pleasure to sit outside after a Spring/Summer round of golf. Smart changing rooms. Everything seem to be catered for an enjoyable day. There are some excellent offers to tempt you to come back & spend more than a day of golf. It would be nice to return in the Spring/Summer & truly appreciate this vast complex at leisure, could be a romantic weekend.
Today, the game was organised by a new TSGer, Alei D. who got us an extremely good deal, £16.00 for the round & we had the course to ourselves.
THE END... Yes, I am trying to write shorter reviews!
