An excellent woodland style course

Brokenhurst Manor GC is a woodland/heathland style course located in the village of Brockenhurst (yes it's spelled differently but pronounced the same), in the New Forest National Park, close to Lymington, within easy reach of Southampton and Bournemouth.

The course was designed by Harry Colt and opened in 1919.

The course is a par 70 off the mens white/yellow tees, and is a par 72 from the ladies red tees. The SSSs are 70/69 respectively!

The course record 63 is jointly held by Justin Rose and Richard Bland!

The course yardages are 6,222/6,020 and 5,616 respectively!

There are 4 par 3s, 12 par 4s and only 2 par 5s!

The course comprises 3 loops of 6 holes with multiple tee boxes in use when required, ie the 1st, 7th and 13th tee boxes! I teed off from the 13th!

This is a heavily treelined course with a few challenging carries over doglegs and ditches! Though heavily bunkered the fairway landing areas are more generous than appears from the tees!

Holes 8 & 9 (indexes 5 & 1), are two long par 4s.The par 3 holes 10th and 12th are also challenging!

There are deep fairway and greenside bunkers to be avoided. Sand is of excellent quality!

The greens are mostly large undulating fast paced and tricky! On the day my putting stats, with only 2 three putts and one caused by my impatience to mark my ball and wait!

While generally the course was in excellent condition there were a couple of holes, ie the 2nd and 4th, where the fairways were not in great condition having suffered throughout their winter period!

Long grasses and ditches await wildly hit shots!

Weekday visitor green fees are £65 (standard summer rate for April - October) whilst it is £40 during the winter period (November - March). Members guest rate is £30 whilst the County Card rate is £45.

I played in their annual Seniors Open Stableford Competition. My entry fee of £40 included coffee and bacon roll, 18 holes and a hot/cold buffet lunch. A great vfm way to get to play such a good course!

This is a very popular visitors only competition entry of 82 competitors! I'll seriously consider entering this one again next year!

Their full 7 day annual membership rate is the same as Cherry Lodge, with their joining fee suspended! This is a course I would happily be a member of if I lived in the area!

There is a good sized pro-shop and staff and members were very welcoming!

SUPERB COURSE

Following my visit here last Autumn, returned yesterday at a Complimentary rate of £15 (normal Green Fee £49). The course is in A1 condition, especially the greens which were incredibly fast and as true as you like. This is definitely one of the top courses on the South Coast and well worth a visit if you can afford it.

A New Forest gem.

Played here today as part of the club's annual "Open Day" - received a very friendly welcome. This course, designed by Harry Colt, is recognised as one of the best in the beautiful New Forest area. Not long but "shaping" required on some holes and ditches to be avoided on others - a good challenge for all levels with interest being maintained throughout. Four good par 3s. Very enjoyable, particularly with the autumn colours starting to show on the tree lined surrounds. Standard fees are high - look out for deals like todays!
