DESCRIPTION:

Piltdown Golf Club, founded in 1904, is a unique heathland course located within 120 acres of the beautiful East Sussex countryside. The 18-hole, par 70 course is known for its natural, bunker-free layout, where the undulating fairways and natural heather provide a strategic test of golf. Set among mature trees and open heathland, the course has a peaceful, secluded feel, with wildlife often seen around the course. Piltdown’s signature hole is the 7th, a par-4 requiring an accurate tee shot through a narrow avenue of trees.

The club is located near the A272 and offers easy access from Uckfield and Haywards Heath. The nearby Ashdown Forest and the Bluebell Railway offer additional attractions for visitors.

Really nice and no bunkers

Some people say that bunkers are required to make things interesting, well when you grow heather in all the right places, you really don't need sand.
A really nice course, great layout and very demanding if you do go in that heather.
I would love to play it again.
Greens had just been hollo tined but I would guess in a few weeks would be in great condition and demand respect

A course with character

A course with no bunkers sounds like Nirvana until you discover that there vast acres of heather, lovely to look at difficult to escape from.
Don't be deterred it is a good course in a beautiful setting but take plenty balls

Great course well worth a visit

Piltdown is a course with a difference no bunkers no water but lots of heather which protects the course,The fairways are generous but a wayward shot and you will be looking for your ball in the heather. Several of the holes need a good drive just to find the fairway, the par threes are all challenging my favorite the 4th 182 yds from the yellows the last 50 yds is all heather right across and up to the edge of the green. a course that i would recommend if you are in this neck of the woods. The greens were excellent. the only disappointment was the kitchen closes at 2.30 so could not get any food

Real golf in a beautiful setting

When we finally found Piltdown we received the warmest of welcomes from players at the 19th; Gary at the bar, Pat and Chris in the shop.

The listed clubhouse is full of character with the modern porchway working well with the original features. The ladies changing room is one of the best,I have ever seen. Very clean, spacious and welcoming; plenty of free towels and lockers and an array of useful accessories.

I loved this course. It is very strategic, so you need to plot your way to score. This course and the heather will punish a wayward shot.

All the greens were challenging and the course planner proved very useful. The greens on this occasion had top dressing, so were a little slow, but you just had to go with it and accept the conditions.

Memorable holes would have to be the par 3's as every one makes you really think about which club to take out. My tip - take one more than you think each time.

Returning to the clubhouse, we were welcomed again by the very hospitable Gary the barman. The lounge area is very relaxing and like most 19ths, difficult to leave.

This course was a delight and I would highly recommend you book a tee time.

Tough little course

Tough little course, no sand bunkers, no water hazards they are just not needed as lots of heather on every hole that catches you out!
