Good course - better condition

Three years since I last played here, and am pleased to report that the course was in much better condition. Greens are now very good - fairways good - tee boxes ok - bunkers horrendous. This is though a really interesting layout and well worth playing (please see previous reviews) - as it is municipal the green fees are always competitive.

Superb for the money!

This course is so underrated I felt the need to write about it! It can be a bit scruffy in the winter, but on a summers day it is a joy! It’s a municipal council run course but was designed by Hawtree and has some fabulous holes and provides quite a stiff test.

Holes to note are the signature 6th with a terrific elevated tee shot which requires a 180ft carry over water, and the 2nd and 12th that have magnificent views of the Solent and industrial Portsmouth. The 17th and 18th are tight and testing par fours with a woodland feel. The 13th has an inviting slim “corridor” of trees to the left to go for the green in one if you are feeling brave, and a safer route to the right.

So add into the mix that you can play this course for a TENNER after 2pm and a FIVER after 4pm, it has got to be worth a visit!!

UP AND DOWN

This is the tougher of the two Portsmouth Municipal courses. It is set high on the cliffs above the city affording great views. The front 9 is very undulating and challenging; the back 9 is flatter and more straightforward. I played during their "Open Weekend" and would have expected the course to be in better nick - dry fairways are the norm in the South at present but scrappy tees, no bunker rakes and woolly greens were a disappointment. Will go back next year though because the course has got plenty of interest.
