Par 3s are very difficult because of hazards in front of the greens which need to be carried.

This is a difficult course to 'master' because of its length in places and hazards, but although the fairways are generally wide the penalty for missing them can be significant, ie bad lies, lost balls etc,

Overall I like this course, firstly because of its challenge, its a fairly easy walking course, its moderately priced and its the closest to where I now live. I particularly found it useful helping me regain my golfing fitness after a period of absence due to illness/injury. The negative is that the area is very windy because of its seaside location. Also I've not placed it in wet winter conditions, but hey my home club can be closed to me during the December to March period.

Because Selsey is a holiday destination surrounded by holiday chalets and caravan parks, it gets a lot of holiday visitors during the summer season. Nearby Chichester GC, part of the Maple group of clubs, seems to be the more vibrant and popular clubs with two 18 hole courses and a driving range.

There is a very small pro-shop at the course, not sure if there is a pro based there, but the shop assistant is mainly there to take bookings/green fees and sell a few refreshments and miscellaneous gold accessories. A couple of buggies are available to hire but must be made before 14.00.

The clubhouse bar is very welcoming of visitors. However, hot food doesn't seem to be available except for booked functions or dedicated club functions. I believe a caterer is being sought but won't likely be available until 2025, if at all!

A Challenging 9 Holer

Selsey GC is a par 68 9 hole course with two sets of tee boxes on each hole, thus enabling 18 hole rounds to be played without exact repetition.

Total yardage off the visitors Yellow tees is 5,637, of which the front 9 is 2,792 and the back 9 is 2,845, ie only a 53 yards difference. However, within the overall total there are more variations on individual holes which results in variety to club selections/approach, eg:

(i) there is only a 2 yards difference between the Yellow and the White members/competition tees on the par 5 2nd, whereas from its 11th hole 'twin' the Yellow yardage is 3 yards shorter.

(ii) there is a 12 yard difference between the par 4 4th and its 13th hole 'twin' which is 32 yards.

(iii) there is a 30 yards difference between the Yellow tee yardages on the par 3 9th & 18th tees (173/203) which for me to make the carry over the ditch and trees screen compels a change up from a 3 wood to driver.

There are two par 4 holes, ie the 4th/13th and the 5th/14th, ie the 1/2 and 3/4 indexes, which are well over 400 yards, and which are unreachable for me in regulation. The other par 4s are reachable but are better par opportunities if your drives are of your limits and on the fairways.

Two of the 3 par 3 holes are indexed as trhe lowest difficulty but in all truth I think they are all very difficult to score pars because they all contain hazards in f
