Countryside brought to town

Rushmere is a pleasant course tucked away in a residential area of Ipswich. The area is in fact common ground with numerous dog walkers, so watch out for 'presents'. I played on a warm day in September and found that the course whilst not hugely so, was a test of my game. The requirement is to keep the ball relatively straight, else you will be in the trees, heather and worst of all, gorse.

The greens are pretty good, most people repairing their pitch-marks, some not - much the same as everywhere really. Bunkers were well raked with a few doggy prints, with not so fine sand, but that means the sand will remain in the wind. Fairways are not perfect, but it is common land so to be expected. Tee boxes are pretty reasonable.

There is a range to take your own balls on and also a putting/pitching green, none of which were used by me.

Bar staff were friendly and the cost of a bottle was reasonable. Unfortunately this shuts at 5pm, so couldn't try anything else after the game.

If you are up Ipswich way, for £15 on a Monday afternoon, you cannot go wrong.

Great all round test of golf

A lovely undulating and wooded heathland course with a really interesting selection of holes, and an extremely friendly and relaxed clubhouse. There is only one drawback. It is on common land where locals walk their dogs. With the green fee you get your own insurance policy number attached to the card.
