DESCRIPTION:

Surrey National Golf Club is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the village of Chaldon, near Caterham. Since opening in April 1999 the course has gone from strength to strength earning a fine reputation as one of the best all year round courses within the M25. Only a year after opening Time Magazine nominated the course as their "Find of the Year" and urged readers to "play it now"! Now with a superb clubhouse (opened Feb 2003 followed by an addiitonal wing in 2004)), the Club has gained a clubhouse to match the splendour of the course! This magnificent building sits perched above the 18th green with grandstand views over the lake, fountains and course beyond. It has all the benefits that you would expect from a new build plus the added bonus of stylish Hospitality facilities. On the upper floor, the spacious and beautifully appointed Fountain Suite is available for a wide range of occasions from Sunday Lunches through to Wedding Receptions. Full details of this together with the adjacent Terrace Room can be found in the Hospitality section of this website. Both rooms feature lovely course-facing views. The ground floorl houses the Pro Shop, changing rooms, Spike Bar and a Sports Lounge featuring a large wall mounted screen TV. The golf course, designed by David Williams, meanders through dramatic rolling countryside populated by thousands of mature trees which further enhance the appeal of this beautiful setting. The topography of the course is extremely interesting with two valleys merging at the northern end offering wonderful views over Farthing Downs with many other delightful scenes along the way. Holes run along valleys and ridges with mainly level play and many enjoyable down hill tee-shots offering a vista of the complete hole. There are two lakes (one teasingly situated alongside the 18th green in front of the clubhouse), carefully positioned bunkers, raised tees and tree-lined fairways. The specification and construction of the course is to the highest of standards with full USGA specification greens, drainage system, computer controlled irrigation of not only the greens and tees but also the fairways). Add to the mix the chalk based sub-soil and buggy paths and you have a great recipe for all year round play! Worth a visit!

Played Surrey National last Sunday evening. Able to get out an hour before our scheduled tee off time and thank heavens we did as we would not have got round in daylight if we had gone out at 1800. Very slow play having to wait 5 to 10 minutes to tee off on the majority of holes. Took around 4 hours 10 minutes for a 2 ball!!

Course was in good shape and enjoyed the course. Definately worth a visit. Would go back and play there again. £25 after 5pm so fair value for money.

Picturesque but very hilly with lots of bunkers

If you like your courses very hilly with loads of above and below feet lies then this is the course for you - there is almost no let-up. Unforgiving of good tee shots as ball rolls and rolls off the fairway. Tough track with lots of bunkers. Greens very hard and fast that certainly caught me out.
Clubhouse could be more welcoming - my coffee and bacon roll was not good. The course is very picturesque - shame as I hear it has been sold for development - no surprise there!

If you like North Downs this is better!

Just the other side of the M25 near Caterham, the Surrey National is very much like North Downs but better. The massive contours of the region make this a very hilly course. Friendly staff, fantastic food, the best Bacon roll I've ever had by a mile. The fish n chips was restaurant quality.
Played the event with the DGA all in with a buggy £40. It poured with rain all day but I still loved it. Maybe a slightly tougher course than North Downs, certainly the better layout in my eyes. The Greens even though hollow tined ran true. If you want a challenge and enjoy great food, look no further!

Wouldn't rush back!

It's difficult to know what's wrong with this course the greens were excellent true & very tricky, every hole is difficult with the ball either above or below your feet on every fairway. It felt very bleak and seemed to lack any charm - maybe better in the summer?

It's fault? South of London!

I may be biased because of my win, but this is one cracking course! I would be happy to play it on a regular basis, but unfortunately it is the wrong side of London - which was proved by the crawl back home.

The whole course has an air of being well maintained and not just a company cash cow. Tees are good, fairways are good, bunkers (two I went in) were good and greens were true and superbly maintained.

This course holds it's own against many much longer established courses, and other corporate groups should come and look at where they are going wrong.

The practice facilities, driving range and chipping/bunker area are excellent. The putting green is somewhat quirky with some real slopes to contend with - makes you worry about the greens on course, which are nothing like as bad - thankfully!

If there are any negatives it would only be in the costs at the bar - I think they are a little higher than they should be - a bottle of Peroni for £3.60 - what??

All In all, if you asked me to play again, as long as it was a weekend I'd say yes (weekdays, only if the M25 was for me alone).

Great if you like hills!

There were some interesting/challengings holes on here, but from a personal point I thought the bunkers were very stoney with minimal sand in, and a lot of the greens quite bobbly. Therefore I think you can get much better value for the £30.00 we paid for an afternoon round. The practice facilities did look good though, but after a nightmare journey on the M25, I never got the chance to use them. I wouldn't avoid it if it comes up on the society I play with again, but not one of my favourites.

Very hilly like lullingstone getting to the 18th is like climbing a mountain and by then too tired to hit the ball. Staff were friendly and I did notice a driving range. Sand everywhere. Not a bad course

No easy pars

It's hard to find fault with Surrey National. The clubhouse, practise facilities and the course are everything you'd look for in a top quality golf course.

Despite heavy overnight rain, the course was still very playable, even if it was wet underfoot in places. However, the course plays tough on dry days, so when the ground's soggy it plays all that and more of its 6333 yard length from the yellows.

Not that the length of the course is its only defence, as the course is played through a valley and none of the holes seem to play flat. Add in lots of annoyingly placed bunkers and some tricky greens, and you have a course that will really test you.

Hole to watch out for? The par 5 5th has a hidden lake that stretches out in front of the green.

This isn't an easy walking course, with a few climbs up to tees and fairways. It is worth the effort though.

Surrey National Dead of Winter

Played after the very heavy January rains.

Most courses had at least a few temporary greens and temporary tees. Not surrey national.

All tees open and all Greens open. Obviously not in best nick and a but slow after winter, but for £25 on a Saturday morning we where pleasantly surprised.

Good quality value for money in winter. interested to see what it looks like in summer.

This is a club I would become a member

Mature open parkland course with undulating fairways (some hilly) and undulating greens, also fairway bunkers and some holes guarded by water.
With some super 'driving' holes. Fairways, bunkers, greens all in good condition.
Practise putting green with a chipping green & driving range across the car park about 400 yard away from the club house.
Excellent club house with small pro shop & friendly staff.
Sort of course I definitely be a member.

Couse Review

This is an excellent course; contains a lot of bunkers; a difficult challenge under good conditions, I played it several times last year but this time I played it under very wet/windy conditions. Greens were also not at their best in terms of readability/pace due to the affects of the recent weather. The one 'negative' for me about this course is that there are too many very steep climbs from greens to teeboxes. Good catering facilities. This was good value for money on the day.

This is a Very Noce Course

What a golf course ! Long and tricky lots of hills some up and a few down I would definitely recommend this one ! Tip keep hitting the ball straight to find the fairways because the rough is just what it say' s on the tin . The Practise facility's very good five stars ! Bar staff friendly proshop staff very helpful I would definitely like to become a member of this course.

Ladies Open on a beautiful course, not that old but mature...

I was invited by my Club to take part in the Ladies Open on 20.6.2012 (Happy birthday to all born on that that day!) @ the Surrey National Golf club.

It was a nice, sunny and warm day. As you drive through very narrow lanes leading to the golf course, you know that the course is going to be in a beautiful setting in this hilly part of Surrey.

2 valleys shape the course, lots of mature trees for a fairly new course, well defined holes, water will come into play at the 3rd,5th and 18th. Big wide and long lakes...

Most of the holes have sloping fairways with plateaux, huge bunkers (sand a little scarce sometimes, making the escape more of a challenge), undulating and tiered greens not as fierce as you expected them to be. The 1st nine holes are in one valley and for the 2nd nine, one crosses a road by the car park and reaches the 2nd valley, both very picturesque but different. The 1st one more manicured than the 2nd. The course was in superb condition and sun made it all looks very beautiful on the rolling hills.

Our Team played well but we did not make in the top 3 so no prizes (we came 4th !), but we were lucky in the raffle in aid a of Charity. Lovely day out for the Ladies Open, all done in true style, halfway house serving Pimms with very tempting home made food, savoury or sweet.... all very delicious.

There was a display of Ladies Golf Clothing & Accessories (classy brands) from Ethna McCracken in the big dining room upstairs where we all eat our meal, tables all nicely set out. A most succulent Carvery awaited the 14 Teams, served with a large selection of appetising fresh vegetable, followed by luxurious deserts + coffee and mints.

It was a very enjoyable experience, I played well on an unknown and fairly challenging course. One needs to be fit and healthy to walk, climb and descend the 2 valleys.

The Clubhouse is modern and airy, with terrace and balcony overlooking the 18th and you also get a glimpse of the 9th...the Ladies changing rooms very posh with all nice toiletries. Very friendly all around: Ladies/Men welcoming. Pro shop fairly large but not much of Ladies clothing. Good practice area. Large Car Park.

I believe Surrey National Golf course is part of the TSG preferred courses so we get a special rate. Take a visit and enjoy it.

Oh dear, would probably be much better in the summer.....

Staff unwelcoming, bacon rolls terrible, too much mud between tees, waterlogged fairways, bunkers were more like ponds, practice area too far away from clubhouse....
Otherwise, nice log fire in clubhouse, good greens, nicely set out holes, good company from SES and Epping Bandits.

Pricey but pretty.......

Enjoyed playing this course although it can be tough work up and down those hills. A good test with some great views (it has a hint of links to it) but at £35 a round I would expect the greens to be in better condition. Would go back.

What a great find...

Played Surrey National on Friday afternoon and had great fun. Course is big, laid out across several valleys with, largely, no sight of the rest of the course. So for most of the game it seemed like we had the course to ourselves. Fairways and greens were in good condition but because it's quite hilly in places it's the sort of course where you need to think about where you want to be for your approach shot. Plus the greens are probably some of the most contoured I've seen (makes for interesting putting!). The club accepts the Open Fairways card which gives 50% off so it's good value at £22. Well worth a visit, we'll certainly be going back.
