A wonderful 'exposed ' clifftop course

Thurlestone GC is a clifftop course located along the Bigbury Bay coastline; South Hams; Devon.

The course dates back to 1897 and was designed by JH Taylor and Harry S Colt.

The course is generally exposed but has some links style features; gorse bushes; pot bunkers etc.

An intimidating risk/reward 'reachable ' opening par 4 hole gets the round going.

The par 3s are very tough especially in windy conditions; 2 are long and 2 two are surrounded by pot bunkers (8 & 9 respectively).

While the fairways are generally large the rough is penal.

Unfortunately 4 holes proved extremely troublesome to mar what could; and should have been a respectable first round at the course.

The course is either a par 71 or par 70; depending on which tee box was used on the 18th hole. We played the 5,981 yards par 70; SSS 69.

There are 5 par 3s, 10 par 4s and 3 par 5s. All the par 5s are on the back 9.

The club was extremely hospitable; complimentary coffee on arrival. The prematch breakfast/lunch was good quality and value.

This was the first game of four on the SES mini bank holiday tour. An excellent venue choice.

Great Views

Long drive down thru some tight country lanes, tough walking course up on the cliffs after a 5 hour drive, course was as you expect lots of bumps and windy conditions. Was in very good nick. £30 for sat afternoon is standard price I would expect, clubhouse was friendly food was good.
