Hi All,
Don't know about anyone else but I am getting very excited about this year's Ryder Cup.... only two hours to go now until the opening ceremony! And bearing in mind it only comes around once every two years, I thought I would start a new thread in honour of the great tournament...
So,
1. - What is everyone's predictions?
2. - What pairings would you like to see?
Personally, I think we (Europe) are going to win easily but I am particularly looking forward to watch Donald/Garcia and I think McIIroy/McDowell would be an obvious choice....
I'm sure there will be loads more to debate over the next few days but hopefully that will start the ball rolling (no pun intended!)
Come on TSGers, lets have them views!

My heart says Europe but head says usa, just think they look incredibly solid across the board and home advantage will swing it.

I am the same Ian.
I really want Europe to win by 14pts but I just think after Celtic Manor being so close that this will be a hole to far!
USA probably by 3pts!
Note: Our resident USA player for the SES [David Pipe], trying to become an honorary Englishman! Said at our game at Lewes on 15th Sept that he thought Europe would win.......you never know. I am ever the optimist!

Well, I'm going for Europe - so that makes it 4 -2 !!
Most of the Europeans have a lot of experience playing in the US, so are used to the rowdy American crowds ..... should be great viewing and a close finish on Sunday - make sure you're in front of a TV at 1.20pm today!

I'm going to stick with my heart......
Go Europe.
Two things Mr Pipe:
[1] We have now cancelled your application to become an honorary Englishman!
[2] Actually, we are number one because we are current ryder cup holders!
Bring it on baby!

I am sorry to say that after all the europhoria of 2010.This cup just aint coming home, the Yanks have proved they dont need Woods, they are good enough without him.
I am normally glued to the box watching it.not this one tho'
Of course I still want us to win,but my passion is not with this one.

I'm with Jack. The ooomph is missing and so I set to sewing the hole in my trousers, catching up on my correspondence, cleaning the floor......the list is endless.
That was the first day gloom over.
Day 2. I'm giving it another shot.
GO EUROPE!

What a huge disappointment the EU boys have been so far...only Poults has the verve, the steel, to give it to them. Westwood and Donald have shown why they will never wiin a major... no fire in their belly's...plodders the pair of them...very good plodders, but they don't win...others loose.
Jose Maria is not a good motivator, so we have to rely upon Poults to fire them all up for todays efforts. We can still do it....
Imagine how many American fans would commit Hari Kari if we did, after all their whoopin' n hollerin' these past few days... incidentally, they have shown once again their overwhelming levels of sportsmanship.... HA!
C'mon the lads!!

OK, what do I do?
Do I spend another humiltaing day watching the Europeans get stuffed by the Yanks or do I do the decent things and attend the family Sunday lunch?
Already spent far too much time watching our lot get stuffed this weekend (although Poults is an inspriartion!) So I think the home cooked Sunday lunch with all the trimmings wins!
Of course, I will keep one eye on the Twitter feed to see if there is any progress in the early four-balls.....
Disappointed of Brentwood.

Come on us Europeans.
Yes I agree we need inspiration - wouldn't it be good to win or draw wearing the Seve colours on Sunday - that would be special.
Poults is an inspiration.
Will watch first few hours and make a judgement then.
[I did originally say we would lose by 3pts, if that happens that would be a good result in itself!].

NOW I feel like I am watching the Ryder Cup. THIS is exciting.
Whatever the result - we have fought back - and fought well.
At the time of writing, Poults has just once again come up with another amazing shot; Garcia has sunk a crucial putt, Rose has just sunk a putt and the sporting Mickelson has acknowledged.
This is what the Ryder Cup is all about.
The last 2 days are history.
Blimey - I'm passionate about this!
COME ON EUROPE.

Well.....does it ever get better than that? Absolutely fabulous, with the Americans demonstrating once again that they DO tend to crack under pressure...and what pressure!! Jose Maria, did a great job in invoking the memory of Seve, and getting them well and truly motivated...didn't think he had it in him, but it was a fabulous performance, and BTW, where were all those red sweaters at the closing ceremony.... Sorry Dave, but in response to your last sentence.... no you ain't. :-)

My favourite bits from last night were:
Mickleson applauding Rose's 40 foot putt on the 17th to go All Square. What a great sporting gesture!.
The European crowd singing: "There's only one Molinari", when in fact there are two (poor Eduardo!).
Westwood asking Kuchar if he would give him a one foot putt for a win. He didn't and Westie told him he didn't blame him.
Olly pulling his cap over his face after welling up with emotion during a post-match interview.
Golf, bloody hell!

Truly truly awesome golf and you knew it by the reaction from the guys. THIS was a comeback of all comebacks. Ditto everything that Chris S says below, but absolute tops was the Mickelson gesture. Then seeing all the teams walking along with beers on their way to the bus - relaxed and everyone deserved to be. Only Tiger looked glum. No surprise there.
Happy that I am not starting my new job until tomorrow, as I was up until 1.00 a.m watching the golf.
Now back to reality and the weather is crap, so no chance for me to get some last minute golf in before next Saturday when I welcome a group from the SES gang to Royal Blackheath. Looking forward to it.

What did I say early Sunday afternoon -
"Come on us Europeans.
Yes I agree we need inspiration - wouldn't it be good to win or draw wearing the Seve colours on Sunday - that would be special."
===========
I said I would watch until 7pm and make a judgement call then but just carried on watching.
After all that was said about Kaymar I knew he would end up making the vital point.
What night - great golf, played in great spirit by both sides and yes Europe won.
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees.
To David Pipe - I shit you not!

Wow! What a night......
Highlights for me;
- Mickelson on 18th - superb sporting gesture
- Rose's putt on 17th - it tipped the odds in our favour
- Westwood's quote "I wouldn't have given it to me either!"
- Kamyer - Nerves of steel
- Poulter - For starting the fight back on Sat night
A great team effort, a great night and an amazing end to a great summer of British Sport!!!!

What a debate Mr. Mullins has begun. I would love it to be Poulter, but the country is voting and the Olympics may take over.......Jessica Ennis, Mo, Ellie Simpson.......but Poulter is a true personality and inspiration. Let's see what we can do. Come on Poulter!

Also don't forget Bradley Wiggins - first winner of Tour de France.
Usually, Europe would win team award and someone like Poults would be in top 3 at worst.
But this year, with Team GB, Murray winning the US Open and all the others previously mentioned plus Chelsea winning champions league I have no idea who will win!!
I would love it to be Poults though and after Europes fight back you never know!

Sports Personality of The Year ..... if it was about personality, then Ian Poulter would surely win ..... or possibly Mo Farah?
It tends to be more about popularity, though and golf is still not a mainstream sport. Does anyone remember 2006, when Darren Clarke should have been given the honour, after his fantastic achievements at The K Club at a time of personal heartbreak? DC came second that year ..... to Zara Phillips, who was more surprised than anyone! A popular member of the Royal Family in the tabloids, no doubt - but not really a top sporting 'personality'? (Damn - there goes my Knighthood!)
With so much GB success in the Olympics and Paralympics, there are many candidates this year. Andy Murray will also be a favourite, but I think Bradley Wiggins will follow 2011 winner Mark Cavendish to make it a 'double' for cycling.
One thing's guaranteed - the show will have to be much longer than ever before!

I have to agree with John...there have been so many incredible achievments this year by British athlete's, but one, IMHO, tops them all, because of it's duration, supreme effort, and the fact that the worlds best, literally ganged up to prevent him from winning...(a commonly used tactic in the sport)...and that is Bradley Wiggins. He has my vote, but my heart goes out to Ellie and of course Jessica! (whose wouldn't) might be old but I have a good memory!
As for Poults, he was magnificent, but we expected nothing less did we? According to the players, it was Jose Maria that was the inspiration - he had them in tears apparently, invoking the memory of Seve to the extent that they all had him on their bags. Good tho he was, Poults is not in the running IMO.
As for Mo...fantastic...but will he now be given a knighthood?...Mr Bliar set a precedent with Kelly Holmes and Chris Hoy. Anyone prepared to set the odds?

Agree John A about the Zara Phillips farce. It should have been Darren that year. Agree John W about Bradders being added to a long and interesting list of contenders. We have to pump up the crowd....keep Poults in the public eye........? Facebook PRing ? Keep it going on here? You never know.

having been out of contact for a while I have the match in its entireity on Sky Plus, so will be sitting down to watch it this weekend, so nobody tell me the results..
My prediciton of course would be USA take a commanding lead into the last day and then somehow allow the event to get the better of them - Europe stealing point after point, with Tiger Woods failing to win a single point...
No doubt there will be some drama, perhaps a chance for the Germans to see off the Ghost of Berhardt from years ago...
OK - not true even I couldn't avoid the covereage and frequent replays... I had thought that the USA on home turf would have too much... and so it looked an unlikely escape for Europe, even then it was nicely balanced throughout the final day...
Well done Europe, unlucky USA...
