Dear TSGers,

I have put my name down for the '5 Club Challenge' at the now infamous Epping GC next weekend and I am now debating what my club selection should be.....

Although I have another week to make my decision, I am currently working on the following assortment:

- Driver (For the obvious distance off the tee)
- 4 Hybrid (Can hit this nearly as far as my 3 wood, so shouldn't lose much there)
- 8 Iron (Favourite club from 120 - 140 yards)
- Gap Wedge (Around the greens and bunker play)
- Putter

On first glance that seems like a good choice, but now I remembering that Epping is supposed to be short but tight? So maybe I should be swapping the Driver for the 3 wood? And the 4 Hybrid for the 5 Hybrid?....Oh dear, clearly I need to give this some more thought!

What clubs would you take?

Forget the driver, you only use it 14 times, and unless you can hit it from the fairway it is excess baggage....
Take a 3wood and change the hybrid for a 5 or 6 iron....

When I play 3 clubs and a putter at South Essex, I use a 3 wood, a 6 iron, and a pitching wedge.

What to choose when limited to 5 clubs, pretty much depends on the course and how you play, I'd agree that the Driver for me is probably not going to make the 'bag'.

I already have my chosen few... based on how many different ways I can use the clubs I choose...

For the record I have already picked:

3-Utility, goes anywhere from 150-190 yards (for a longer course it might have been a 2-Utility or 3 wood)
7-iron (I can push this from 120-140 yards, and chip up to 100 yards as required)
9-iron (favourite club around the green, chip to about 80 yards and flies to about 110 yards)
Short game wizard, great from 60 yards and out of sand - at a push about 80 yards)
Putter - mandatory...

For longer courses I might have picked 6-iron and 8-iron combo instead, also knowing some of the course layout at Epping I hope to have picked the right clubs to avoid trouble

However selection of the right clubs is also determined by the way you play...

So my selection suits me... may not suit everyone (Ian you should leave my 3-wood at home).

Hi there - here's a thought as well, although the driver can double as a putter, it can also double your putts...

3.95 for that old 3-wood.. Ian I would have paid less.

Any club from 8 upwards can be used as a putter if you take your time.
Distance is not really an issue if you get the accuracy..

Agony of choice, 5 Club challenge:

When I play @ Silvermere, my Club, we have a 3 Club challenge + the Putter, so to have an extra club to choose from would be bliss.

My choice would be determined by the course I would be playing, the time of the year, whether it was my 1st visit, etc.  But in principle, for me as a Lady TSGers, high hdcp, my 5 clubs would be:

1.     Rescue/hybrid 21
2.     7 Wood
3.     7 iron
4 .    9 iron
5 .    Putter (but that could be replaced by Sand wedge as I can putt with my 7 Wood or Rescue club).

I think being restricted to 5 clubs is a good idea & brings a little more care & thoughts into one's game  & a good challenge.   it will be interesting to see  how the scorecards compare to one's  previous games.....

Well Ian F. (as opposed to M.),

I would love to join the Epping Bandits on their home ground but it is a fairly long drive.....  and of course I would love to play with 5 clubs of my choice.

I do my best to play golf in Essex & with TSGers, but cannot always venture North of the M25,   as it is a long journey even when traffic is flowing & my fuel bill is exhorbitant & I have to get up very early.

I hope there will be some days when I shall be able to join the EB, but on recent occasions, my twenty something hdcp was not accepted on some posted games.  So if you want me to join, you will have to have me as a "guest" .

Anyway I am diverting from the topic in question.

Good luck with your club selection....

I knew "Duffy Divot" would chose his 9 iron in his selection as it was a topic that came up after our game at Bentley GC last Friday, when our friendly TSGers enjoyed their 19th hole...

Just a bit more to think about, the last couple of days have been quite windy, so I may swap the short game wizard for a PW instead. There's not much sand around anyway.

I always thought that the Sand Wedge should always be one's best friend.... for delicate chip shots around the green  that will get you close to the pin

Hang on Mr.Fykin, you didn't mention my pin point accurate driving and my superb short game and my deft touch on the greens? Nethertheless, feel very honoured to be invited into the inner sanctum that is the Epping Bandits!  ;-)

Ps Think you should make it official though and set up an EB page!

Duncan - welcome to the wonderful world of TSG!

:-)
