Hi Darren,

I heard that it had re-opened but only as a 'pay and play' course and that there was no tee time booking just a turn up and play option. I was also told that there is no access to the clubhouse (more of a shed) next to the car park.... and yes, no known as South Weald rather than Weald Park?!

Shame, I was hoping this was going to be back to its best in 2013 but sadly another club that will struggle to make ends meet for the forseeable future!

Regards

Ian

Passed there the other day. Definitely called South Weald Golf Club. Green fees on sign given as £10.00. That's all the info I have.

Not bad really.  A few holes were quite wet, but I played there last year and it was a lot worse.

Had a quick chat with the owner to get the facts about what has really been going on over, but not for an open forum, lets just say until at least the end of March it will be run as it currently is.

Played here over the bank holiday...

A stunning unulating course with mental mind twisting holes which is good to see.  Eg a drive through a potentially very narrow gap, but when you really look at it your drive will soar above the trees as you are on an elevated tee, hitting over a shallow valley to an elevated fairway!  Also great 90 degree shortish dogleg which is a risk reward hole...

Yes club house is now a portacabin (shipping crate like) all due to the unfortunate issues they had.

Tee boxes, fairways and greens are very well kept.  However bunkers do need a filter to remove most/all the pebbles/ stones.  There is enough sand in the bunkers.  Well drained course.

Husband/wife who are there running things are very kind an amiable.  Weekend green fee was 20 pounds with a bacon roll.  Can't remember other rates, but most included a bacon roll, except Thursday, I think.

If you don't mind the bunkers, yes I hit two, then a great course to play and I would have no qualms playing there again.  Went round in 87.

Am member of Essendon Country Club.

and you play off 28 (net score 59!! how many stableford points?  I find it a very hard course, and have played there with someone who plays of 18, never seen them get around in under 95. You must have had a really good day Great review though.

Glad to see that someone shares my views (MIchael Atkinson's) on this inspiring, challenging & picturesqe golf course.

I just hope that the new management will have enough resources to sort things out.

I cannot wait to return but when the weather is drier as it can get a little muddy in places

I didn't realise that they had changed the name from Weald Park GC to South Weald GC!

Tomorrow morning will see me and my playing partner teeing off.  I only live ten minutes from this course.

Yes, it is now a pay and play only course, and from what I understand it's £10 midweek.

I have played here once a year for the past four years and the course always needs some tender loving care.  But it never seems to get it!

Played here once and there were black buckets in every bunkers.  Turns out they were there for you to put the stones in!!!

A nice, undulating course with some very interesting holes.

Very wet during the winter months which surprises me as it's quite hilly.

I do like playing here despite it's condition and I'm looking forward to my round tomorrow.

I don't have a handicap, but am quite handy going round on an average (all time over past 2 years) 91 but last 5 rounds are averaging 83...  Swing by Swing app over last 10 rounds say I am a 15 hcap.  Probably time I got an official handicap! :D

I have not played here since the new people are running the place.

Played there late last year and it was in a poor condition.  With the weather we have had and the amount of time I doubt if they will have done much to it.

Hopefully, now the drier weather has arrived they will start to improve the place.

It's a shame really as it's a nice course, and like most courses if they spent a bit of money on it it could be really nice!

Used to be Weald park, then SouthWeald and it had been allowed to atrophy. New Management for 2014 and there have been substantial changes made. it will be a work in progress, but speaking with the Pro - just bunkers and greens to be treated... the rest of the course was quite splendid, nice tee boexs, good fairways, fair rough.. a few trees have been removed which makes it more playable... Always was a good layout and seems to be moving in the right direction. Despite heavy rain the day before, the course was not adversely affected (unlike other years) and it was nice to walk.

Sadly I wish I could give this place the same vote of confidence.....

Having contacted the club with regards to updating their course pages on TSG, I was met with nothing but a rude and unfriendly receptionist, who insisted I call back rather than leave a message for the Pro to call me....

I decided to point out to the club my experience (via email) and a little later I received a call from the Pro, who's only response to my complaint was "Well we've never had anyone mention it before!". No apology, no regret, nothing. Having explained again that I was trying to update 'their' club details for their benefit nothing improved, and as the conversation progressed, it  was obvious that this Pro had no interest in TSG, "Yeah, I've heard of it" but seemed disinterested in who we were or what the site was about. After a few minutes, I chose to end the call to avoid further confrontation.

Once again I reported the incident to the club site.

It's this kind of arrogant and abrupt attitude that ruins the game for us nomadic golfers and it's not the response I would expect from a club that is trying to repair its reputation.... why such a short-sited attitude?!

Clearly, this is ONLY my experience but I will certainly NOT be visiting this club until such time as I received an apology from the club (I have heard nothing in three weeks?!) or indeed my fellow TSGers can convince me that they have changed their ways.

What a shame, I only live 3 miles or so from this course and would have been happy to promote them to all and sundry!

Happy Golfing!

Ian

ian, i have read about your unfortunate experience with these people and was wondering if you knew that the new owners son who is managing it for him is actually a member of this site, it might be worth trying to contact him directly to get some resolve. his name is stuart seabrook if you think its worth trying that avenue
hope this is of any help

Hi Daryl

To be fair, that is who I reported both experiences to; having seen his efforts to change the perceptions of the place on TSG. Stuart was concillatory and polite on his emails but at no time mentioned his role at the club(?) his only comment, that he would address the issue. But I have yet to recieve an apology from either the Pro or the receptionist for their terrible attitude.

As I said, this is only my experience and one I am more than happy to review, upon positive feedback from other TSGers ....

However, while we can all forgive a stoney bunker here or there or a fluffy green, there is no excuse for bad manners or poor customer service!

:-)

sorry ian i thought that you might have just experienced the bad customer service from the staff and not with anyone who had a say in the image and perception of the club
but if that was the owners son you had dealings with its obviously the message thats trying to be put out
shame really but thats the view from the top
i would have thought that they would have been all out on a charm offensive

I would agree with Howard about the staff in the clubhouse, and the starter. I didn't speak to a pro.

The course is in reasonable nick except the greens (which are terrible) and the bunkers (which are empty, and GUR).

I wouldn't go back until the greens are fixed. It's a cheap round (£10 on a bank holiday) but I'd rather play on a green which isn't a total lottery. Once that's done it could be a really nice course.
