Dear All,
Thanks very much to all those that put their names down for inaugural TSG MatchPlay tournament (sponsored by The Altonwood Group), a fantastic response from you all. Unfortunately, despite being a sell-out once all the membership and handicaps have been checked, we are left with a total 50 TSGers participating, meaning some will receive a bye in the first round! Home player has first dibs on where you play but I would recommend everyone is flexible to ensure no one is having to drive unnecessary distances!
All Ties to be completed by end of April - next round draw will take place mid-April and be posted here and in the TSG Monthly Newsletter.
So, the moment you've all been waiting for, independently chosen by my Nephew (aged 9), who wanted to know if it was going to be on Sky Sports (one day Freddie, one day!).
Here we go...

Good luck everyone.

Hi Carlos the rules were laid out in Feb newsletter it was full handicap with the difference taken from the lowest h/c ie. if your 25 and your playing against someone of 20 the difference is 5

Hmm Clarification needed?
I'd assumed as I play of 25 and my opponent 22 on holes indexed 5 – 7 I would have an extra shot to him?
Is the system if we both shot the same strokes up until one of the holes indexed 5 - 7 (in my case) we would score ½ point on each hole, then if we both shot the same number of strokes on index 5 I would win it scoring 1 point and so on?

Clarification re. handicap difference in Matchpay:
for example a 25 hdcp against 22 hdcp
the 25 hdcp gets 3 shots over his/her partner, ie . 1 shot for holes indexed 1, 2 & 3
So to recap, a 3 shots advantage for the whole game, so a very close partnership.
Each hole is a match in itself, you win the hole, you halve it, etc. so one gets a chance on every hole.
Make sure you know the Matchplay rules (and tactics as well) as it can be to your advantage and rules are different to Stroke play, & Stableford.
A lot of information were posted in the most recent Newsletter.
Hope it helps and is correct (someone corrects me if wrong)...., but above all enjoy your game (I love Matchplay)....

If the two handicaps are 20 and 25, the player with the 25 handicap will receive 1 shot on each stroke index 1 to 5, all other holes they both receive nothing.

Remember the aim of matchplay is to win enough holes so that your opponent is unable to beat you. You win a hole by taking fewer shots (net) than your opponent. The handicap differential comes into play as detailed in the instructions above. This is the type of match when you see what your opponent is doing and then make your best effort on a hole by hole basis. Remember that you can't lose the match in the first 9 holes (but you can make it difficult for yourself). With the full handicap differential it is a fairer competition than 3/4 handicap (which tended to favour the lower handicapper).
There are all sorts of tactics to be employed to give yourself the best chance of winning and I have listed them all below...

and most importantly

make sure you use all of these tips at some time in the competition...

Reply for Michael, postings are visible as we leave our comments, views are just people reading the visible content and not needing to make a comment. I don't think we (the end user) can see who has read what... and would it be useful information for us?

SS tips will be as long as his "blueprint" on course review but could be useful as I believe Stephen knows/understands a lot of the tactics, as he has played Matchplay in previous years.... but will not share all, quite wise ....
By the way the sky is blue and the sun is shining in Florida, still a little cold, will play some golf soon, watch out for my reviews

John and Bridgitte you have got it right this is correct

Rules difference between Matchplay and other formats:
Too long to detail but the only thing I would point out is that playing for Matchplay & Stableford points at the same time will create confusion for players not used to Matchplay.
I know some TSGers do it but I dont think it is to their advantage because of the tactics etc..........
Well that is all from me, let see who writes next & what, yes Alan , a little bit more excitment within the TSG forum.
Weather getting much warmer in the Sunshine State but the sky is bright blue.
