After recent visits to various clubs for opens and members comps i have witnessed some strange and varied putting practice routines. Some have just ventured to the putting green and hit 2-3 putts then walked off, others hit a few putts, watch a couple drop in and proclaim "thats enough, dont want to use all my good putts up" then walk off, some seem to have a meaningfull routine, while some just seem to be there wandering around whilst hitting a few putts
What routine or technique do YOU use when you practice?
I will make a start...
During my practice routine i have now started to putt with the toe end of my putter (blade putter - rotated 90 degrees), seems a bit strange but my thinking is, as the toe end is flat and not wide if my putting stroke is ok the ball should travel straight and if i am pulling/pushing my putts the ball will vere off each direction (obvious i hear you say - the same as hitting it normal) my opinion is its not the same, try it and see ;-)
I dont worry about distance as all i am trying to achieve is hitting the ball on the correct arc, you can see if this is happening by the markings on the ball going end over end (yes i know you can get this with conventional technique) but like my post title this is one of my routines.

I always use the same balls as I play with (Srixon distance as their cheap)
i always use 3 balls and I always move to the ball and not putt from the same spot.
So I get on the putting green, throw the balls down and putt from where they land to a specific hole, I am not worried at this point about them going in but just inside the dustbin lid on the first stroke. I always complete the putt so I practice loads of differant lengths including inches away.
i then bring them out and again carry on from where they land, but vary the hole I use so I mix long medium and short ranges. Always just going for the correct lenght, pace etc at this stage but also aiming to only 2 putt every ball. The odd ones go in ofcourse.
i do this until I have got a feel for my rhythm etc and after about 1/2 hour I am really getting close every time.
i then start again but this time going for the hole in one but again putting out every ball. I aim for at least one of the three balls going in first time.
When I have had enough I then start putting from about 3 to 4 feet but must do 10 in a row before I actually finish. I must spend about an hour all in finish.

Ash,
Really ?????????????
My routine: I use 2 balls, putt to a Tee peg starting 2 feet away, then 3 feet away, then 4ft, away..
Then do the same to a specific hole with my eyes shut, nice training for the feel, pace etc... Make sure the practice green is a reflection of the course's greens.
I also just do practice putts all round the edge of the green for the feel.
I spend 10/15 minutes at the most.
I can recommend a very nice book on putting: "Silent Mind Putting by Robin Sieger"...................

Yep, really. I spend more time putting than anything.
my putter lives in the boot of my car along with a sleeve of balls and on the way home, or sometimes to work, I will putt away at leisure.
one day it will show!!
