That's not my title, I nicked it from Golf monthly.

I got involved in a friendly discussion recently on the course with regards to single players. It would appear even though the rule was changed 10 years ago many of us are 'out of touch' according to Golf Monthly mag. and me for that matter. Here is the paragraph from the magazine.

'Although the new etiquette wording has been around for 10 years, many golfers still trot out the "Single players have no standing" mantra. sometimes this is because their particular course have chosen not to adopt the new guidelines via their rules and by-laws. However, more often then not, it is simply that they don't know things have changed and are living in the past".

The rule book states that a group is a single player. It would appear though that some clubs can put in their own local rule to get over this new rule. If any club I went to did this I wouldn't go back.

To many clubs are stuck in the Victorian era, run by out of date buffoons...in my opinion.

I have never experienced that 'rule' being imposed on anyone, although I can well imagine it from some of the stuffy old Colonel Blimps and the like. If someone is playing alone, invariably they are allowed through with a smile and a bit of banter perhaps, or even invited to join a two or three ball.

The game HAS changed in that regard...there are very few, if any of that type of club left standing.

HOWEVER, if a chap is let through then proceeds to hold up the group, looking for lost balls and the like...he should get short shrift, and told to clear off.

Alan,
I was one of the players guilty of thinking the single player status was still no right of way.
I'm normally happy to let a singleton through, though in this particular case, we only had 3 holes left to play, so it hardly seemed worth it. We did let him through when we were on the green of the par 3 16th, only for him to play a wayward shot. Typical! He only held us up for a short while though, and did in fact confirm where we were meant to go next, so useful in the end.
My 'no status' comment was from being a member of a local club a few years ago, where that still seemed to apply, and given I rarely read a golf magazine I just assumed more experienced members knew what the current rules were. You live and learn.
