Hi, I know the rangefinder was discussed a few months ago but I clicked on the sky caddy advertisement and ended up looking at the bushnell pinseeker rangefinder with slope edition. It was my understanding that you could use the range finders but not the ones that got more technical i.e slope adjustments. But on the website it states that it conforms to USGA and R&A rules. Does anyone know what the rules are? Are they telling the truth or is it just advertisement "truths". I know my club (London Club) does not have any specific rules and allows you to use pretty much anything you want but I also know other clubs (West Malling) have rules. Anyone know if the rangefinders with slope are legal in external comps? Regards Steve

On the basis you're a UK member a quick call to the PGA reveals that the situation in the UK is as clear as mud. Essentially it's a local club ruling with the guidance being that basic range finders, ie those that simply tell you the distance, are okay for competition use but those that offer additional information, eg advising alteration in playing distance based on gradient (up or down), are not. So, you may be able to use one in a club competition and then again you may not !

I've got the most high tech range finder on the market! It can work out terrain, wind conditions, obstacles ahead of you, distance to the pin and condition of the greens on the day you are playing.........................................................It's called my brain! It's also free.

Roly, my brain is obviously not as high tech as yours because it can work out terrain, wind, obstacles, condition of greens but it can't work out yardages to obstacles and greens when I'm on a course that doesn't give much of a clue. For example in Spain where they generally seem to have forgotten to put in distance markers and course planners are noticiable by there absence. But... the buggy you are in has satalite distance technology and is showing 162 yards to clear the bunker and 177 yards to the pin, you look up at the sky and think who needs technology and pull out your wedge..... Regards Steve

From my understanding of the rules, it is each individual clubs decision. My club have only just started allowing the use of GPS devices in competitions. But they must have everything else turned off. They can only tell you the distance to the green and other obstacles. Russ
