Was it just me..... or did Rory McIroy seem well and truely miffed when he lost out to the crown on SPOTY last night??!! Maybe he needs to learn how to handle defeat gracefully................

It was the same look that Jenson gave a few years back when he got pipped at the post. They are all there to win - as far as all top sportsmen and women are concerned, second is the first of the last places.

Trouble is no-one knows who Rory McIlroy is..... outside of Golf!
With very few hours on terrestrial TV now showing golf, alas, the wider public have no knowledge of the stars..... ask most people in the street to name a gofler and most will quote Tiger.
Sadly, whilst the powers that be are happy to take the SKY pound, the sport will continue to decline amongst the younger audiences, whereas, Lewis Hamilton gets BBC, SKY and tabloid exsposure....

Yes, I think you are right, Ian..... and interestingly enough, the papers were saying that because he chose to play for Ireland and not England in the Olympics and the way he allegedly unceromonly dumped Caroline - may have contributed to him not getting enough votes....
But, whichever TV channel decides to cover golf, I still maintain the way he behaved at the awards ceremony was pretty ungracious - wonder how other viewers viewed it??!!

Nah, I don't think he was a victim of bad press over his personal relationships, no one cares about him or who his girlfriend is or whether he plays for Ireland or GB. He just isn't known.
Too many of our golf stars are living in the States now and they just don't make good newspaper 'copy' in the UK. Poulter is probably more well known than Rory.
I've said it many times, but golf needs a 'bad boy'. Someone who is brilliant at making headlines, falls out of nightclubs as well makes putts. But I am not sure the blazer brigade would agree!

Quite honestly, with the exception of the Tiger of old, or perhaps Poults...golfers are the most boring bunch of sportsmen (if you could call them that) around. The only time you see emotion is the final putt on the final hole...if they've won. The Ryder Cup DOES evoke emotion which is why it is such a great event. They are so busy keeping their emotions in check in order to score well. Thats the nature of the game.
As for the bad boy image...I don't think that is the answer..it all but destroyed Tiger and Daly. They need to lighten up, stop talking in monotone and be far more approachable.

Of course we would all love a charismatic, iconic player to come along a type of golfing Beckham. Maybe Ricky Fowler fills that spot for the yanks?
But the British (golfing) establishment will on really except, a certain breed.
Faldo was labelled boring, he had to content with Seve in his pomp, hence the majority would rather the affable Spainard win that a true British giant of the game.
John Daly changed so much about the game, but became almost a freak in loudmouth attire weighing in at 20+stone.
Greg Norman made the game a bit sexy for a time, but the nature of the beast is cool & mean gets the best results. Poulter is a breath of freash air but has flattered to deseive as to titles. Justin Rose looks very serious but seems better equiped to win than say Westie or Luke.
Rory is still very young, I'm sure he will develope more maybe once he has his own kids etc. Tiger is such an odd ball, we really don't need a British version....do we?
