Im not a member of a club and use this site as an unoffical handicap calculator.

I seem to find some members not using a good score card to calculate their handicap, is this so that  come competition time they would have a few shots advantage. Not that it bothers me as I always compete against myself and dont like to play for big prizes yet! Just trying to get some understanding on the way things work.

I will endeavour to use all my scorecards whether good or bad so that I get a fair handicap calculation. Is that the correct way of doing things?

Hi Dan, a club will require you to submit a minimum of 6 scorecards per year to maintain your handicap. These they tend to take from you during club competitions because (they think) in a competition there is less possibility of you 'easing off' on the last few holes to protect your handicap (and give you an advantage in a big competition next week...).

However, if you're honestly trying to track your game and your progress (and not trying to give yourself an unfair advantage when playing against others) the more scorecards you submit the more information you have to available to see how you are progressing, see where you're leaking shots, see where you need to focus on imporving and more accurately track your handicap. (it's harder to 'fake' a handicap if you can point to a history of your last 20 or 30 games).

Having said that, the reason it's not compulsory to 'include the game for handicap revision' is that you may feel that you want to record the scorecard as part of your game history but it wasn't representative of your playing standard (pouring rain, temporary greens, hurt your wrist, hung over! etc).

So, in summary, yep record as many games as you can and use most of them to revise your handicap and you'll get more respect from other golfers (and won't get called names when you play out of your socks and score 6 better than your handicap would suggest).

Fantastic reply TSG. A great point made on the conditions of the course at the time. Obviously winter conditions may hinder your play so maybe I will take that into account the next time I shoot a really bad score.

Many thanks TSG, and the new servers are working like a dream.

I'm one of those people who put in every scorecard, as long as I play the full 18 holes.

My handicap (16.1) is a true representation of my playing ability at this moment.

If you pick and choose which cards to enter then you are just fooling yourself as to your current abilities.

I've seen people who are having a good round deliberately mess up the last few holes so as not to affect their handicaps come the next competition.
