"indefensible" is a bit strong

I thought women wanted equality, but of course this isn't so.
If there was a club that men wanted to join, but the women members said they didn't want men to be able to join, nothing would be said on the matter

They have not chosen to ban women, women have never been allowed to join and they have voted to continue with that tradition, which as a members club is their choice, there are many clubs with the same rules women cannot enter the long room at lords. I am sure there are ladies clubs where men aren't allowed. They will not host the open and probably other comps. It is not my choice but as a consumer vote with your feet don't go there.

How often is the vote? I suspect this rule will not last long..i understand it was a very narrow margin. The paying members voted, respect the outcome. The club may pay/live to regret in members leaving 'who were for women'

Not quite 'a decision to ban on women' more a case of adhering to an old tradition, I don't believe there have been any women members at Muifield so it would be impossible to actually ban them.
The vote to continue with an exclusion of women as members is a member's choice (albeit only just) and in my opinion is a dark day for golf as a whole.
It remains to be seen how the lack of revenue (no Majors, less people on course, disenchanted members leaving) will impact the status of the course, I would guess that it can only be detrimental to future commercial viability.
In my opinion no golf club can be wholly reliant of membership revenue as their main source of income... more courses need to open up to green fees, including women and juniors, just to stay afloat in challenging financial times.
The answer is not 'foot golf though'...
