Sometimes you stumble upon some real gems of the profession who are genuinely there to help without wondering how they can rip you off or see what else they can prize out of your wallet. James is one of those such people that I was lucky enough to find online, but fairly local to me.

I simply needed some to help with my driver shaft which I had shortend a little too much and needed it back to near original. I sat in his workshop and chatted while he worked away giving me loads of advice without being condescending - a good 40 minutes of work for just £7.50 including all the bits and glue etc. Really not sure if you would get that kind of service or value from any high street American corporate! Yes he is old school but very much in tune with what is happening in the modern golfing world and I believe able to help with any club issue, from simple grip changing to being able to custom make clubs to his own design.

Just thought someone like James should have a mention. He's the genuine article.

Yes he might be a little way away from many members but has his little workshop at Lindfield Golf Course (West Sussex) - so you could get 18 holes in while he helps you out.

James is a member of the Golf Clubmakers Association of Europe and a really nice guy.

I can highly recommend a Club Maker by profession but now working part time:  Dave Doyle from Basingstoke area. Very personal & professional & friendly service.  Dave knows his stuff and I was very surprised to find out that some of my Ping clubs supposedly to be certain lofts were actually varying quite a lot from the manufacturer's specification
Dave checked all my 14  clubs, adjusted the loft, lie angle and sometimes the length to make them  equally spaced and suited to my build and game.

I only wished I had discovered Dave years ago.  Dave Doyle writes or used to write full page articles in one of the monthly golf magazine, very interesting reading.....

Highly recommended for a professional and efficient service.

For re-gripping, try your local pro shop or the Discount Golf Store (they have a website online) which is near the near Carpenters Arms roundabout on the outskirts of Rayleigh, which is probably 15 minute drive from Wickford for re-gripping, they also offer a trade in service so may take your trolley of your hands as part ex.

Alternatively for re-gripping, have a look on Youtube and have a go at doing them yourself, it's not that hard and is probably cheaper in the long run if you plan to re-grip every year. You need the following:
  • Grip Tape
  • Golf grip glue or a bottle of white spirit
  • Hook stanley blade
  • A vice to hold your grip
  • You can get all of these bits from adoregolfgrips.com or from Ebay
It takes approx 5-10 mins per grip

You will find at least 10-15 Youtube videos for re-gripping, as a number of youtube golfers posted some very recently

Thanks
Gary

My club pro won't regrip your clubs unless you buy the grips from him, and he doesn't sell the grips I like. His assistant will do it on the sly but you have to wait for him to be there without the pro. It's a farce.

I used to use the pro shop at pay-and-play course Trent Park who charged £2 per grip but now it's American Golf and they want £5 per grip.

So I learned to do it myself. The time consuming bit is getting the old tape off, especially with graphite shafts you don't want to scratch. I quickly realised that the "pros" changing my grips were just leaving the old tape on.

The first 3 or 4 take 10-20 mins each but you quickly get it down to 5-10mins per club.

Hi my 2 favourite golfers , Steve & Neil, well just to let you know that my golf is still one of my priorities.  I  just wanted a more compact trolley & I don't really need a GPS watch I use my brain a bit more I
suppose and I am quite good at knowing my distances having a GPS in my car if that makes sense.

Steve:  we are due for our yearly Rawlinson vs Lockwood Matchplay !!!!!
i am still a "bandit" and you still have to give a few shots !!!!

Take care both of you and hope to see you on the fairways very soon with my new trolley .

Brigitte x

As a matter of fact I think we are due two this year because we missed last year.  We could do home & away, are you still a member at Hampton Court Palace?

Steve,  lets catch up on our Matchplay.
Home & away seems like a very good idea.

I am not a Member at Hampton Court Palace anymore but happy to class it as my home course, hoping we can get Tee time and also happy to play at your course .
Thank you
Brigitte
