So, having just got back from The Algarve where golf is much more expensive than in the UK e.g. 70 - 80 euros per round. I find myself and my Barber (who is a golfer too) disucssing how much would you be prepared to pay to indulge your favoured pastime?
Now Paul (The Barber) say he would happily pay $600 to play Pebble Beach but interestingly, he wouldn't pay the same amount to play St.Andrews - Old Course?
I have always taken the view that no golf course is worth more than £100, so I thought we should put it to TSGers....
HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY?

Unless you are planning to play in the low season I very much doubt you will be playing the old course, Carnoustie or Muirfiled anytime soon Martin, the Old course is currently £195 per round high season and this is one of the cheapest premier courses you mentioned. You can at this time get onto the old course £95 if you can get a tee time.
Augusta is out of reach unless you can qualify for the Masters, they don't accept green fees and the list of members is very secretive, the only way you get to play is by knowing a member.
Playing premier courses in low season is not a bad strategy particularly if the courses are Links.
I played Panmure in December which is £120 a round in high season for £40 albeit from a portable golf mat, and Ellie which is £100 high season for £47. Both courses were in good condition with no temp greens, it was very cold and yes it rained but if you are dressed in the right gear it's not so bad.
Would I pay £200 for a round, probably yes for some of the premier courses, for example playing the open courses. These are once in a lifetime experiences and therefore if you can afford to do it then why not?
However there are a lot of courses out there you can play £50-80 which are of a similar quality to the premier courses and in those instances they in my opinion are worth the money.
Finally I can't think of any courses in Essex that are worth paying north of £50 per round...

I suppose I'm a bit fortunate being part of The Disabled Golf Association, EDGA, BIG and England Golf. I've never paid more than £40 to play golf (other than charity events). I get a buggy and a meal in with that. So the prices quoted above seem an incredible amount of money. Hand on my heart I'd pay £50 - 60 for a charity day at a reasonable venue. For a one off round of golf at a Sunningdale or Wentworth probably the same?

The less the better
I play once a month at Wycombe Heights which is £25 guest rate, my local The Notleys is great value at £12.50. Also the odd charity game which are obvioulsy a lot more: however, charity games aside anything over £25 is too much

Normal round...£50 max, mainly because there's enough good quality for that limit....
Augusta....name the price, If I could afford, loan or steal it I'm there
I played Wolf Creek in Nevada years ago...$75 for the day, we did 2 rounds...if I returned and it was triple I'd play... unbelievable
Most I've ever paid was £250 for Doha golf club...week after the European Tour had been there...and no other courses in Qatar at that time so no other choices....well worth it too
