 Hi all,

So,,,,,,,, finally I managed to get 3 cards into my club to gain an official handicap so I can play comps now.

The big question,,,, the cards I placed were for a  101, 94 and 89. The handicap I was provided was 15. I have questioned this as I have been looking everywhere online to see if this was correct.
The course is par 72 with a SSS of 72 from the yellows as these are the tees I played from.

Any suggestions?

Firstly on any card, for handicapping, if any of your holes shows more than 2 over par, it will be reduced.. ie, if its par 4, and you score 7, it will be classed as a 6.

So go look at your cards in this light. Secondly, handicap committees do some strange things... It's not as easy as working out an 'average'. And of course, handicap committees are a law unto themselves. Play another couple of qualifiers and if it 'proves' your handicap is wrong, appeal. Problem is, is that they could argue you are manipulating!

I'm sure the resident handicap genius (Paul) will have a view.

(And by the way, if it is set as your handicap, get TSG to align your club and TSG handicaps, then carry on playing from there)

Thanks for the reply and this sort of really clears things up. As my cards are quite erratic, 6s here and 7s there, I do have a few pars and a couple of birdies, so what you said makes sense.

Hi Richard welcome to TSG.
I can't see your cards, but it looks as though another one of the team has addressed your handicap?

The TSG system is set up to give a good general handicap for Social Golf purposes.  Unlike Congu which is far more rigorous under competition rules.
With the TSG system over a season you are likely to be one maybe two shots under, a Congu handicap. Mine is within a matter of points.

Like with any self controlled handicap system we do require a bit of honesty, we know 'give me's' take place and other flexibilities when scoring.  But if cards are regularly submitted... you'll be supprised as to how accurate the system is.

I do look at cards that end up on the leader board and try to support those who consider their handicap is too low.  Usually we can find a middle ground. You sound like a strong 18 handicapper to me, I look forward to meeting up at some point.

Kind regards

Paul

Sounds to me like the 15 was right! If you are a member of a golf club they stipulate a minimum of 3 cards. The card with the best score is used yo calculate your handicap ax already pointed out everything over a double bogie will be knocked down to a double bogie and all birdies, pars and bogies stay as they are the score is totalled up and however many this is over the standard scratch will give you your first handicap! So an 89 with a SS of 72 without any knockdowns will be a 17 handicap.

CONGU calculates a new HC based on all three cards.
CONGU online Manual 2019 page 38.. I'm not sure how TSG does it though..

Your first handicap is loosely based on your first three cards then, as with TSG, it continues to change as you enter more cards (in CONGU's case competitive or declared extra cards). New handicap system starts in November and that will average your best 8 scores from your last 20 - and I guess Adam is in the process of having a nervous breakdown working out how that is going to work on here .

Thanks John. I don’t know why everyone keeps quoting Congu?
We (TSG Team) are not affiliated to Congu and only use their guidelines for reference in certain areas. We believe our handicap system to be robust and fair for all TSG members.

I'd guess 'we' is TSG Owners and 'fair' is the system in place.

Anything out of place is surely down to players honesty in 'gimmes' and score reporting.

Fair call

We must be the owners as a lot I play with wouldn't describe it as robust..

Fair is not the case for lower handicappers imo...if you care or follow it or enter cards still...

But does put me off the comps on here for sure
