Hi All,
This may be a hot topic but I'll dive in.
I am faced with this gentleman that calls me to play with him on a semi regular basis.
He has told me he has been playing since his teenage years, so being a beginner, I thought I could learn a thing or two from him. First off he's pretty much a chain smoker which doesn't set with me being a non-smoker sharing a cart with him. He tells me he's out golfing for the fun of it which seems pretty innocuous however my observations have been less than positive. He has a short temper during the game and he finds a method of fudging his scores. Many times he loses his ball in the rough and doesn't take a stroke penalty. He will also move his ball to a better lie when he makes the fairway.
I should note he insists on keeping score. Being pretty much a newbie to the game adherence to the rules of the game is very important as far as I'm concerned. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but I wanted to hear your thoughts on this.
Cheers !
Shawn

It's what you do that matters. Don't worry about how others you play with act or bend the rules - it happens everywhere. Just play your own game whoever you play with. The game is hard enough without worrying about others. (only time to worry about anyone else is in a competition)

Thanks John,
I just didn't want these factors sucking the fun out of it.
I'm really loving this game and I want to keep it that way.
I think my approach should be is to play the courses as best I can and go from there.
Cheers !

Hi Shawn, like john says try not to worry about what others do. Focus on enjoying yourself. People who don't keep to rules and ignore etiquette will eventually run out of playing partners. Nobody will want to share valuable time with someone that they wouldn't choose as a kindred spirit. Worst thing that might happen is the bad influence rubs off and beginners might think it is acceptable to be overly demonstrative/disruptive.
My advice, for what it is worth, play the game, keep to the spirit of the rules, enjoy the good times, learn from tricky situations. Non smoker, must be disturbed by chain smoker... I would keep my distance and perhaps walk... Not share a smoker's buggy.
Better still enjoy the challenge and there will always be someone else to join on the golf course. Lots of good people in the tsg...

Just to echo the previous comments, like many others i play because i love playing, good or bad. I put a lot of stock in fairness, etiquette, thoughtfulness towards my playing partners and respect for the game. I don't try to compete during friendly games but rather I play against the course.
As a smoker i fully respect those around me and try to stand/walk separately from others and be aware of where my smoke is going so as not have others have to tolerate it. Love the game, respect the game, respect others.

Not sure I would play with him if thats his attitude!
Such a shame we live in a world where consideration for others has taken a back seat over a me, me culture.
As previously said, mark your own card and let him worry about his.

Play against yourself and you'll enjoy it more....if you shot 90 last week....85s the next target....or if you play stableford then aim for 32+
Cheats in all social / competition / society golf and every sport come to mention it...

Thanks for all the replies, I began to notice a frequent cough for two to three days after the golf with this guy, so I finally had to give him the bums rush and he didn't seem to care anyway. Go figure.
The guy is a big asshat.
In other news, things are beginning to wind down for the winter here...now one wonders how to keep my golf fix going.....
Cheers !

Intrigued to know why you would play against yourself and enjoy it more???
Just find new playing partners!!!
Golf is by nature a social game.
Be careful you will selling your driver on ebay next!!!!

Hi Greg,
Perish the thought of selling my driver.
I’m considering getting a new one however.
There’s a Senior League I’m going to join for next year. So I have hope.
If I needed solitary activity I could take up Stamp Collecting....🤪

My point is that surely when you play (whether a comp or social matcor whatever) you want to better the last time you played ?
So if someone is cheating (unless it's an official comp or there's a side bet) say something or don't...I would be more keen on shooting my best round than what a cheat did!

Thanks Bridget, 😊 I've spent plenty of time on my own at the practice range. It's a great idea doing a round on my own. I just might do that before the snow flies.
Cheers
