I have had a 60° Cleveland CG12 DSG wedge in my bag for a number of months now and have noticed the club head is starting to rust, which according to the manufactures is part and parcel of the characteristics of the club helping promote more feel from the club head. My question is can the rust transfer onto the steel shafts of my irons? Kind Regards Dale Strachan

Rust isn't contagious, its the result of iron (which is the primary constituent of steel) reacting with oxygen and water (or moisture) so, no, it won't affect the shafts directly. However shafts aren't immune to rust. The chrome finish on steel shafts will delay the onset but shafts should still be wiped down (WD40 is good for this) and kept in dry conditions to keep them rust free. Oh, and they will rust from the inside out so don't poke a tee down the hole in the grip as it'll break the covering of grip tape that seals the top of the shaft and stops the ingress of water. Hope that helps, Colin .

Colin, Thanks very much for the feedback. A colleague at work started the whole rust transfer myth off by relaying a story about a set of Nike irons that he had purchased whilst on holiday in America which apparently had eroded in this way. I will add a little WD40 to each of the shafts after cleaning and with a little luck this should keep them in tip top condition. Dale Strachan
