I am due to travel out to Portugal on a family holiday in April, and I am a little concerned about the transportation of my golf clubs. My wife contacted our insurers and apparently they are covered by our home contents policy to the value of £2500 but my question is do I have to get my clubs independently valued in order to receive the true value if anything went wrong. This is my first golfing trip abroad and I would be grateful for any advice the forum could provide. Dale Strachan

My clubs are covered on my travel insurance. When my driver was broken on the flight back, I had to provide proof of purchase and proof of ownership to the insurance company. I no longer had the receipts but managed to track down the credit card statement which I provided to demonstrate the value of the club. They also wanted something else to prove that I owned it (apparently the credit card statement wasnt enough). They suggested the instruction booklet or guarantee!! and couldnt quite understand why I didnt have either. Eventually, after much correspondence, I sent them a photo taken on a company golf day of me holding the club (although the picture was so small I could have been holding an umbrella and you wouldnt be able to tell), and told them they could contact the club captain of the golf club I was a member of if they still didnt believe it was my driver. More practically, all insurance companies will have different policies, and different propensities to pay claims, so I would suggest you give them a call to find out exactly what the details are and what would be needed if you did need to make a claim. Also I would get a travel golf bag. Hard cases are better but more expensive and harder to transport. I use a canvas travel bag for my clubs and bag, ensuring the top of the bag has plenty of padding and adding bubble wrap for extra padding/protection. Hope this helps.

If you are sure your clubs are on your household Insurance make sure you have the lowest possible deductable for them, I had a whole complete bag of clubs stolen from the back of our truck while we had breakfast at an A&W in Alberta Canada. The police said they would only document it as stolen, the deductable had been changed on our insurance and it was rediculous to try to get any compensation... soooo... I would still like to rip off the face of whoever stole my clubs! Read over what the airlines say about sports equipment and compensating for damaged or lost articles.

What, you mean you threw away the instruction book for you driver. Well, that explains quite a lot And no, mine didn't come with one either. And neither did the balls

Thanks for the feedback. I will contact my insurers and find our exactly what conditions apply to my policy and also what proof if any they would require should a claim need to be made. I sound very much a glass half empty sort of guy, but I have read so many negative articles about insurance in general and would hate to fall foul to a clause in the small print. My wife bought me a Galvin Green club travel bag for Christmas, but I take your point about bubble wrap for extra padding / protection. Finally has anyone got a spare copy of the instruction booklet for a Cleveland HiBore XL driver as mine seems to be leaking to the right on occasions !!!! Kind Regards Dale Strachan

The hassles experienced by many when trying to get compensation for stolen/damaged golf equipment from their house insurance is why most people opt for specific 'golf insurance' (not to mention the fact that you're liable for accident/injury to others caused by your wayward golf balls - which is always covered by golf insurance but not covered by house insurance). As you're in the UK you should check out the 'Offers' section for excellent, comprehensive golf insurance at £25 for the year !!

Does anyone on the forum have an existing policy with the insurance provider Golfguard? Also can anyone suggest any specific pit falls / clauses in golf insurance cover that I should look out for? This is my first trip abroad with my clubs and I want to ensure that I have adequate cover at the right price. Thanks in advance for your comments. Kind Regards Dale Strachan

Yes, I've got the GolfGuard Insurance and it certainly looks pretty comprehensive. Previously I had golf insurance from The Golfers Club but it wasn't as comprehensive as the GolfGuard policy, was twice the cost (£58 per annum) and only covered Europe whereas GolfGuard is worldwide. All in all, no contest, the GolfGuard insurance is worth every penny of the £26 I paid. PS. before I got specific golf insurance I checked out my Home Insurance and decided the exclusions and policy excess meant that it was useless for my golf equipment.

Pete, Thanks for your feedback. It certainly looks like the best deal on paper for golf insurance but has anyone actually had to clam back off it. Kind Regards Dale Strachan

No, thankfully not had to claim on the insurance. Why don't you phone GolfGuard and see what they say? (the policy is underwritten by Lloyds of London not GolfGuard so they should be able to tell you how often they have claims rejected by the underwriter). Pete
