I'm posting this here in case people missed this news in the TSG January newsletter.
England golf are planning to provide a route for nomad golfers to obtain a handicap. There appears to be some pushback from clubs already stating that this should be put on the back burner for the next 12 months as they are worried about members leaving clubs, however England Golf are still planning to push ahead with this which I think is a good thing.
I suspect we might hear more about this scheme towards the end of 2021 and hopefully before then we will have the opportunity to play golf again...

Will be great to see this get off the ground as I've always found trying out more courses one of the biggest appeals of golf to me as I tend to drift about between courses rather than sticking to the same club. Missing out on a handicap has always been the drawback though

So just what benefit will be a handicap that we have to pay for? I have my own view but interested to see what others think...

Would give those that should so wish, the chance to enter Open's etc. Or play in legit competitions. The majority on TSG will probably not be interested - and I don't think it will be as big a take up as England Golf are estimating.
I like the idea that everyone is given the opportunity, but I have already got that access as a club member.

For those who are not members of a club, some clubs do not accept a virtual society handicap to play on their course, and I guess they could choose not to for England golf handicap system however I suspect that would be a harder argument to push.
For me personally I would like to play the Old course at St Andrew's and this does require an official handicap. If I can obtain a handicap from England golf my guess is this would be accepted.
Anyway that's one of my reasons.

Fair comment Gary, if your course of choice demands an official handicap then there is a good incentive to invest in the england golf offer. However there are many many good courses who are less particular. I think the take up may be less than expected same as jb.
There are other ways to obtain the requisite handicap...

I am lost !!
Member of a club with a handicap is the equivalent of a golf passport to other courses.
Not a member then being in society's like TSG allows you to play at other courses by joining arranged games etc
I think the WHS is going to take time to bed in first without catering for those who don't join golf clubs but want basically the same 'passport' as club members.

Good point Gary. I play in EDGA events which a santioned by the the European governing body for disability golf. As are some England Golf events. What I am hearing is that if you have a WHS handicap you may well be able to play in England Golf sanctioned events? EDGA is very quiet on how it will proceed. You need a handicap of below 14 for many events, WHS changes so quick you may have to leave qualification till the last minute. Real can of worms.

I agree mate, but the elephant in the room is will affiliated WHS 'Nomadic' golfers be able to play in club competitions? I can see it happening at golf centres where the take up on Competition is low? Where does this leave the club member??

My clubs annual membership is £42.30 incl. England Golf fees. You can pay and play and join official competitions. They don't own the course, its a bit like a Society in residence. No need to pay £1000 and commit to playing at one course for most of the year .You can maintain your official handicap and still be a nomadic golfer. . Best of both worlds. :)
