Hello,
I am still learning the game & many videos & guides all take place on a practice field as opposed to a golf range, plus they always seem to have a green to chip on & a bunker to hit out of.
My question is 'where do i find this place' to practice on. Yes most of the courses I have been to have a putting green to practice on & a couple have had a chipping area .. but tbh my garden had better grass.
So where in or abouts Romford, Essex can I use a field as opposed to a range? Where would I find a decent chipping area onto a decent surface?
Where else would anyone with more experience than me do this type of practice?
I dont believe hitting off range mats is doing me any favours at all
Thanks for any reads and any forthcoming advice / answers
Jason

Welcome to a world of golf. If you ever find a practice field do let us all know. The best I have found are practice areas as part of golf courses and some driving ranges. The driving range is a good place to develop and practice a swing (especially when weather is inclement.).
There are reasonable practice areas at canons brook (Harlow), Staplefird abbots, Hainault.
The driving range at north Weald has a good short game practice area, including bunker and a good onsite teaching pro.
Other facilities are likely to exist.
Bear in mind that not all parts of a golf course are pristine grass, so playing out of difficult lies is always good practice too.
I found that starting on par 3 courses (Hobbs cross for example) is a good introduction. BTW Hobbs cross has a good range and practice putting green, not sure if there is a bunker practice area though. Usually playable when everywhere else is a bit soggy.
Other people may have better suggestions.

Thank you very much for the reply.
I have considered walking over to my nearest course, which has public footpaths going across, and taking a few balls & a club at the end of a day & sneaking in a bit of practice, but that seems a bit wrong even if no one is actually playing.

I'd be very careful about practicing on 'vacant' bits of a golf course - could lead to an outright ban before you've even started. Steve's suggestions are good. What you will find is that many clubs have a practice area that is usually cost free, just take a bag of your own balls. Go on the range wharever and it will cost (increasingly more and more with Trackman etc).

Yes, as I said feels a bit wrong to think about it let alone do it.
Yes one of my ranges has top tracer so off a tee I can at least guage my progress, but as I said off a mat I believe isnt helping my short / mid game.
As chipping onto a green seems to always feature is the millions of videos out there its frustrating not to be able to do just that
I will keep up my efforts
Cheers

My only advice here, is if your going to find a public field to practice in, make sure you are fully insured!

I would give the Par 3 at Dunton Hills a go. The greens aren't great for putting but you can hit anything from 9 iron or full wedge and half shots from green to tee and even practice punching 6-8 irons for run ons and chipping.

Thank you.
I have been recently to Hobbs Cross & they have a large practice putting green, a new covered range & a separate chipping area.
I have also been advised to go to Ingrebourne links par 3 as they also apparently have a chpping area & bunker practice.
so a few options to try out
Thanks again

Jason, Ingrebourne Links also has quite a large grassed patch adjacent to the covered area for you to hit balls down the range. I know cos I live nearby and used it.
