Dear TSGers,
An interesting debate has arisen following a meeting with our friends at Leading Courses....
Do you use a Scorecard e.g. Pen & Paper to mark you scores during your round and then record it online later or do you prefer to use a App while on the course?
Our view was we rarely see anyone using an App on the course but is this a generational thing?
e.g. Anyone under 30 sees a Pen and Paper as a complete waste of time, while the over 30’s dont want their phone on at all, whilst playing?

Personally I always use my phone as I cannot be trusted to not lose the pencil during my round

My two-penneth...
- The Club scorecard is often and 'should' be the most up to date distances etc, Apps aren't as they are made by a third party
- I can make other notes on a scorecard, e.g. Fariways, Putts, Bunkers etc
- Most apps are clunky and if in competition, how would it be signed by my playing partner?
- If I submit scores while on the course, I am liable to make an error and correcting can be difficult
- I dont want my phone on as its a distraction
I get why the younger ones like scoring Apps, but I wonder if they'll change their views in their later years....
So, I guess that means I'm firmly in the card & pencil camp!

Personally I will always use a scorecard over a app because you can't rip up your phone in anger on the 18th๐

Card and pencil every time.
My Saturday 4 ball is split 3 card, 1 app.
I would have to wonder if 'the younger ones' who only ever use an app, have turned off all the add ons that are available, but against the rules.
Always carry a mobile on the course. Partly habit from a previous need to be available, but mainly to see just how far I have walked, AND to have a copy of the rules if needed. (Played a match against another club, one player had an air shot and was convinced it was not countable. Checked walking down the fairway as they had cited how it was, and it was true, airshots don't count - ONLY IN JAPAN! So a good reason to carry one for rules)

Interesting divert from the original topic BUT an 'Air Shot' does count...unless on the tee, when the ball is not yet 'in play'...
A stroke is defined in the Rules as the “forward movement of the club made to strike the ball”.
If you start the downswing with a club, and you intend to hit the ball, it counts as a stroke whether you rip it down the fairway or swing and miss.
The definitions says a ball first becomes in play on a hole “when the player makes a stroke at it from inside the teeing area”.
Rule 6.2b (5) also says whether a ball is teed, or on the ground, when starting a hole – or if you’re playing again from the teeing area under a Rule – “the ball is not in play until the player makes a stroke at it”

Sorry if I got a little off piste there - just put it there to explain the need sometimes for a phone, with the R&A rule app on it (and gurgle).
And it came up as a 'free shot' in Japan - just google it. Whereas us normal (!!) people in the rest of the world count an air shot, as a shot! Wasn't trying to say it didn't count!

I'm a card man in the main, a lot of my games are comps so I have no choice and if playing in a group it is generally a lot easier to grab everyones score on each hole on a card.
Have used my Garmin or other GPS to cature my own scores on occasion if I am just out for a practice round. Scoring apps like Vpar or Gamebook are very good if you are playing in an organised event or group game where it can be nice to see a dynamic scoreboard.

I tend to use an app if it's a casual round as it has approximate distances. In comps I'll opt for both as I don't trust myself to lose either a pencil or the scorecard and it's nice to have a backup. I do agree with others though, phones are distracting... I tend to turn all notifications off whilst playing.

Card & pencil are easier, better and quicker to use. I carry a separate sheet to record club seletion, yardage & puts.
