A cautionary tale  as it is probably time to change to studded shoes.  At the second hole stevenage golf course yesterday, yours truly performed a majestic somersault down a slippery bank, landed full on right shoulder. Xrays revealed a shattered shoulder joint, ball part split into3 parts one part relocating 3 inches behind the socket.  Tomorrow I am scheduled for a whole shoulder joint replacement, so that's the end of golf for the rest of the year at least.  Just like the bionic man, I will become the 3 quid bloke.  Oh yes and by the way it does hurt just a tad.

Hi Steve,

This sounds dreadful, I hope you make a quick recovery.

Use the TSG Masters as a target, hopefully you'll be back by then!

:)

Update, I am home safely following extensive surgery, new shoulder joint and a recovery time line that is longer than expected, at least 6 months, maybe more.  Had the top surgeon coming back from holiday during doctor's strike, assembling top team for 5 hour surgery.  Top care, not enough food and great service from our wonderful NHS.

48 hours later, little discomfort and now classified as at least 50% disabled. Might have to reset handicap lol.

Best wishes, I intend to get back to golf when I can

So sorry to read this Steve, I am amazed that there are not more accidents like this when I see what foot wear my colleagues play in!  I always use studs even when its rock hard like now.  Probably as a disabled golfer I take more care?  I wish you a speedy recovery my friend.

I took up golf when I was injured playing tennis, I was quite a good standard tennis player some years ago. Somehow I don't think I will be able to play left handed..

Onward and upward Steve. You'd probably run rings round Marky, even playing tennis lefthanded!

You're a bit hasty to judge, Johnny Boy.
I, too, played a good standard of tennis back in the day. Jack of all trades, me :))
Glad you're on the mend, Steve x

I admit to being a bit naughty and am already trying 1/4 swings.  No impact possible until the new year though.  Should be possible to putt and chip early in the new year (weather permitting).  Scar is quite spectacular,  and physio is not without discomfort.

Targeting masters or par 3 for return.

Will take time to recover.  What can be done with my handicap, obviously I won't be able to play to previous level.  (Could never be that bad again).

Hi Steve, saw the photo, it doesn't look real. Don't worry about getting a game next year I'm saving your 4 ball at Bletchingley.

Recovery continues, some American research suggests that 90% of golfers who had the same surgery, do return quite successfully.  Some even improve distance and handicap, however there is no English research that corroborates the American research.  I am allowed to putt now, January I should be chipping, might need a new swing though.

Take care in the winter.

Physiotherapist continues to identify new ways to exercise me.  Improvement is linked to commitment and I am grateful for seasonal good wishes.

Wishing you all a safe and a very merry Christmas and a happier New year.

A very merry Christmas to everyone at tsg and hope your back on the course ASAP. I've not played since Bletchingley due to work and injuries so you might be playing before me. All the best now and in 2024

A happy new year to all, my recovery progresses, although slowly.  I should be able to swing a stick in a few weeks, albeit a modified swing.  I may never play as badly as before.

Looking forward to a return to golf courses and playing soon.

Glad things are progressing Steve..

... we are all waiting for the 'modified' swing and to be made to look silly as you (as ever) poke the ball down the middle of the fairway on the way to your first 'Trevor'.

I should be putting again this month, chipping and approach work during February, all being well driving in March.  Ready to plot my way around golf courses by April.

Best wishes and the modified swing will be a spectacle to behold.

I have just read this. Very sorry to hear. Bad luck to get such a severe injury. Reading your comments it seems you have the grit and determination to come back stronger than ever. I hope so, and look forward to seeing you at an event later this year. All the best, Pete

Determination and true grit, I visited the driving range today, knocked a small bucket of balls off the mat and they all went forward, then tried half an hour chipping and putting.  Just a little discomfort...

Only using 1/4 swing at the moment.

Progress ...

If anything 'iron man' only because I have suitable music ready to play.

I am also a bit happy with progress,  putting is still OK and chipping from the edge of the green  just need a bit of practice (although the first one went 'in the hole').  Shoulder a bit sore but no more than expected.

Physio continues

Did a great job!
Tha main thing is to start. It tooki me a long time to recover from my injury, but it wasn't as hard physically as it was mentally

The mental aspects come into play more so following injury.  Building confidence in a new modified swing, allowing time for recovery.

Clubs and shoes (with spikes) loaded into car, ready to go.  Driving range beckons.  I am comforted by some American research that suggests players with the same shoulder replacement return within 6 months and 80% report improvement in overall game.  Probably something to do with the limitations of shoulder variations.  Or some fake reporting lol.

Best wishes to tsg members, I hope to be showing off again soon.

Happy to say that driving range action has gone OK, I am looking to return to courses before Easter.  I would like to say thank you for good wishes and I look forward to enjoying pleasant days out again.

Ideally looking for nice flat  dry short courses, and open invitations.  Crazy golf included...

Best wishes and I will enjoy the masters, do come along and have the chance to view the scar lol.

Thank you for your good wishes, I have managed a return to golf course, shoulder wasn't bad, more of a struggle through the soggy boggy windy Risebridge.

Still taking it easy but will be playing more from now on.

Read all about it in the new blog, a bit over-dramatic in places.

A return to winning ways may take a while though.

Best wishes to all.

Looking forward to a return to bletchingly, i am back on golf courses, still working to restore distances, modified swing is about a club and a half shorter than pre-surgery and i work hard to endure discomfort.  Scar is well healed.  Hope there is a wooden spoon at the TSG Open.

Remember to bring a bit of cash on the day...
