As you need a annual sbscription for these, are you sure yours is still up to date?

Heather, a few questions,

Is the power on?  I've not seen the Sureshot GPS so does it have a light to say it's on?

Do you need to install software to download the golf courses?  It might be because you haven't used the GPS for a while that the software is corrupted, try to re-install it and see what happens.

I'll phone you tonight as it looks like Thursday is going to be the only day this week that I can play golf with Nat.

Paula is off work for the rest of the week and she's got me doing decorating jobs!!!

Firstly, did you simply try turning it off and on? I've occasionally found mine can't get a satellite lock and turning it off and on resolves it.

Secondly, was it clipped to his belt? The trouble with GPS is that while it generally works through anything permeable - clouds, glass, clothing and plastic for instance - it doesn't work too well through humans (or metal for that matter).

When first switrched on it needs to figure out where it is. It does this by scanning the sky for GPS satellite signals and using some exceedingly complex maths to work out its location. If its clipped to your belt and you're moving about it's never in one position long enough to get a fix on enough satellites (6 to 8 afair) to figure this out so it simply keeps scanning.

The Sureshot's satellite signal strength indicator will show a flasing dot if it can't get a sufficient fix. My SG2.5 also has a more detailed satellite indicator. If I goto Menu / Advanced Settings / GPS / Satellite Search & it tells you how many satellites its locked on to. Yours might have the same.

Best be right now it to turn it on, take it into the garden, and leave it there. Give it 5 minutes and it should tell you its several thousand yards to the first green.

Hope that helps,

colin

Have you tried doing a hard reset? I had an issue with my SureShot in that it wouldn't take any charge and I was unable to turn it on once the battery had drained. I ended up returning the unit to the UK distributor, who in turn sent me a new unit. I have also had 2 friends who had similar problems - one just after the warranty expired. It may be worth calling them and explaining the problem. They may be able to shed some light on it, or you can try the on-line help - http://www.sureshotgps.com/help.php

I would echo Jason's comment. My Sureshot stopped working completely and suddenly as I was walking up to the first tee. I wrote to the people who were listed as the warranty agent who told me they were no longer doing it, but in the end all that was needed was a hard reset and it works fine now.

Thanks am waiting for a reply from my email to Shureshot.

Don't hold your breath if you've emailed from their website. They all go to the US and I've yet to have a response to anything.

I can PM you the contact details for the UK office. They've always been helpful.

I'm taking Nat for a round of golf tomorrow on the Priors course.

How do you do a 'Hard Reset' on this unit?

I've never used on, I have my own GPS but it's not a Sureshot one.

But if you can tell me how to do it I'll have a look for Heather tomorrow.

She tells me that they are getting power to the unit but it appears that it isn't picking up any sats!

I got a reply this is what they told me to do   Can you please do a quick test for us?

Go outside and turn on your SureshotGPS.
Then go to:

Features / Status / GPS Information / GPS signal screen.

After a few minutes you will see the satellites being received. Each
satellite is represented by a vertical bar. The satellite number is below
the vertical bar and the signal strength is the number inside the vertical
bar.

Could you please then note the signal strength for each satellite after the
unit has been turned on for 10 minutes? Then email this information to us.

Please note: You must have a clear view of the sky during this test.
I did all this and emailed them back what I saw so am waiting for a reply will let you know what they say.

How to reset: look at the bottom side of the unit. There is a plug for the power attachment and a small round hole. Poke a pin through the round hole -- that resets it.

I'd suggest sending it back. Personally, I'm looking to change my GPS as soon as I can to SkyCaddie. The thing I liked most about sureshot, was the ability to save scores and analyse your game, but I've just updated the software to v3 and I can't access historical info anymore as v3 is a web based application and unable to access the records held locally on my pc. Nice!!

I took Heather's son Nat for a round of golf today and Heather came with us for a walk.

We took the Sureshot GPS out and turned it on, there is power but it never connected to a satellite.

The unit was on for about 25 minutes in the open while we hit some warm-up shots.

So it looks to me like it might be faulty.

I hope you get your unit replace Heather.

A GPS is a good item to have when playing new courses and for working out how far you hit a ball.

The fact they have responded sounds promising, so one way or another I am sure you will get it resolved soon. Until then maybe a good old fashioned course guide will have to suffice. They do at least offer assistance.

If you are thinking of changing to another GPS system (sky caddie etc), bear in mind they do NOT have the same data base. Some courses are on one system, but not on another. I would check to see if the ocurses your son is going to play most are on the sky caddie database.

I have had a Sureshot for about 2 years and occasionally it has locked up or lost sats, but the hard reset has always worked for me.

I upgraded to V3 software and have noit had any problems, that was both the GPS unit AND the pc software.

It helps when he goes round a new course he can not use it in comps, I got the gsp because I do not play golf and could not help Nat when he was younger got it when he was 9, He dose not rely on the gps when we went round the course I keep asking him how far did he thought it was to the green and only when he answered I told him the answer at 9 he had trouble judging distance , it also measures his clubs which helps him chose which to use gps suggests clubs most of the time he uses his own judgment. Have not used it for months as he knows the courses he plays all the time was going to play a few he dose not know so it helps shows obstacles that are in the way and where the green is on a new course.if you are going round with some one that know the course than that is great but if not gps helps a lot

I totally accept what you're arguments but it is also a skill to learn the judgment of distance and the correct club to use. Even the Pro's get it wrong which is good to see!
