I'm sat here watching the UGPGA event on Setanta Golf.

There is a par 3 hole on that is 202 yards to the center of the green.

The pros are hitting a 5 iron!

Now in my bag I don't have an iron that I can hit that far so I would have to use my 3 wood with a reduced/slower swing.

Now I know they are going to hit the ball further than the average golfer but I normally say a 7 iron for 150 yards, but I probably don't carry the ball 150 yards, I might get a bounce or two in on the way.

The only thing you can't tell on TV is the elevation of the green and which way the wind is blowing.

A lot depends on the swing and build. I'm tall with an upright stance, so hit a 7 iron 175 yards with no run, as the ball comes down form height and usually stops within a foot or so, at least on the green it does. As i never use it to lay up, i would not know what happens on the fairway.

As for a 200 yard shot, that is about a 4 iron for me, so not a lot of difference, apart form repeatability of direction!

I normally use a 3 iron for 190 yards, so 200 yards is a 3 iron with a good bounce/run.
