At present, I understand that the site sends out emails only twice per week notifying you if you have any emails in your inbox.

Personally, I find this lacking because I don't need to log onto this site very often and would much prefer if I got an email telling me when I have messages, rather than having to log on.

I've emailed the owner and he said that some people complained that when the system sent out emails each time you got a new message, some people complained it was like being spammed.

What I want to propose is this:

Do people want to get emails each time they have a new message on here?

If not, would you be capable of selecting to opt-out of email notifications?  That way people who want email notifications can have them and those that don't, don't get them at all (so no complaining about being spammed).

I too would prefer to have an e-mail if somebody responds to a topic I'm interested in, or even to a game I've put up.

They could have a 'check box' so people can switch off the e-mails and only receive the e-mails they actually want.

hi Nick,

I too would like to recieve my e mail when they are sent. It makes sence to have the option that you suggest of being able  to opt out.

Excellent, thanks.

And to be able to click on the link in the email and be taken straight to the site where you would be automatically logged in would be even better.

The system sends email notification of a new game in your local area immediatelly.

The system used to send email notifications of unread messages daily but some people complained so we changed it to twice per week (Monday & Thursday). Based on the responses to this thread I guess an idea would be to change the current options of email notifications Yes/No (the option currently available in the 'My Account' section) to perhaps have a check box offering 'never', 'once per week', 'twice per week' or 'daily'.  Would that work better?

Yes that would work well.

However, if I select "daily" and for a particular day I don't get any messages will I (a) get sent no notification or (b) get sent a notification saying I have no messages?  You see what I mean?  Obviously it would be pointless getting a notification saying I have no messages.   Alternatively, a further option, if this can be integrated, is for the system to email me WHENEVER I get a new email.   ie I get an email today, I get a notification today.  I don't get my next email for 2 weeks and I get an email then.

If notifications can be fairly instant that would be good too, rather than being sent at a particular time during the day.  The reason is this:  If the system is set to send notifications at, say 2pm, and I get an email sent at 2:01pm, then I wont actually get a notification until the following day at 2pm.

Yes, I agree that it would be pretty irritating to receive an email saying 'Hi, just to tell you you have no messages...'

So how about replacing the existing email notification option (under the 'My Account' section):
'Do you want to receive email notification of unread messages?' Yes/No

With a wider selection of options ie:
'Do you want to receive email notification of unread messages?' Immediately/Daily/Twice per week/Once per week/Never

The system sends email notification of a new game in your local area immediatelly.

Does this include games posted by Friends and Groups I'm a member of? If so, then its not working (for me at least). Two games have been posted by friends recently and I haven't received and notifications (and yes, I have checked my account settings).

Thanks,
col

Hi Colin, the system sends out email notification of games which you could attend ('Open Invite' and games for your 'Group') but only if:

1/ You have set the configuration option to say you want emails ('My Account', 'Notification Preferences')

2/ The game is within the range you have declared ie 10, 20, 30 miles etc ('My Account', 'Notification Preferences').

So, I'm guessing that the games you were NOT notified of were outside the 'notification' range you specified (default is 30 miles). Does that sound likely?

It only seems to be "Friends Only" games that are affected (two posted on 9th March). I've received both Open and Group game invites posted on 7th & 5th March respectively. Just to confuse matters it seems that the Friends Only games appeared in My News but the Group and Open games haven't.

1. The option to receive game notifications is ticked.

2. One game is 50 miles aways (as the crow flies), the other is 5 miles away.

Also, not strictly related but it seems odd that Friends and Group games are restricted by mileage.

Thanks,

Colin

Oops. hit post instead of positioning the cursor.

I was going to add :

ALong with:

Email me at my account email address if you want screen shots or more info.

Umm, certainly seems to be worth investigating (maybe a gremlin in the works).  I'll contact you directly for the detail to support the investigation.

Thanks,

I would also like to have e-mail when ever a response is posted that I would be interested in.  If one wishes to opt out, then give them the option.  It is hard to find golfers in my handicap, as I only started golfing when I retired, I like it but I'm not very good.  One needs to play a little more then once a week in a league to improve, and it gets a little boreing golfing alone.

I thnk it is extremely important to received e-mails as they arrive...Waiting two or three days to receive an e-mail is the same as Sprit not sending text messages until 24 hours after it was written...

Okay, based on the above I will add the following to our Change Request Tracking System:

Enhance the options available to the Member when configuring their account (under 'My Account') - Specifically the options available in response to the existing question 'Do you want email notification of new private messages?' should be changed from the existing 'Yes' / 'No'  to a wider range of options ie  'Immediately' / 'Once per day' / 'Twice per week' / 'Once per week' / 'Never'

Everyone okay with that?

Nick,
Your suggestion is great, I only hope that the owner of the site will give it positive consideration, lets cross our fingers that he does.

Hi,

I just joined today, following somebody sending me that putting/slope game - so it works. Looks like a very dynamic not so wee club/community going here. I shall certainly keep an eye on things and do best to make a contribution where I can. Just done a course review of my own course to start things off, no doubt it may create some feedback!

Good to see the owners are quire active in taking ideas for improvements, this augers well for a growing and healthy virtual club.

Regards,

Ken
