Hi all, anyone had their clubs 'fitted' for them in south-east england (I don't want to travel 200 miles for the service!).

Plus, if you have, did you get to select from standard clubs eg Adams, Cleveland, Callaway, Taylormade, Ping etc or did they only offer obscure (read expensive) clubs?

Hi Pete, I bought my Yonex irons from the American Golf shop in Romford.

The custom fitting is free (but we all know it's added onto the price of the clubs!)

I think all of the big golf superstores now offer custom fitting as part of the service.

There was a big difference in the performance of my new clubs compared to my old ones, so I'd say getting your clubs custom fitted is as important as the clubs are.

During my selection process I selected all the clubs that I like within my set price range.

Then into the driving bay and had thirty minutes hitting them.  We then selected the three irons I liked the best, and finally we wittled it down to the set I bought.

They didn't try to push me in any certain direction regarding the irons, although I wouldn't let them if they tried!

I would have thought you should be able to go to your local Golf club and ask where to get this done. I had seen at mine in POrtsmouth ' Great Salterns'. The good thing about this service is if you buy the clubs from them instead oif taking the details and buying them online they actually take the price of the fitting off of the set you buy so in effect its a free service. they say it is to fight the online business and give you a good local service.

I would try calling your local club and seeking your clubs from their, I ended up with some very good Wilson Di7's

cheers

Thanks for both bits of advice.

I'm not saying that you guys didn't get excellent clubs perfectly custom fitted to your very needs, BUT, I want a broad range of clubs to try (and most club pros offer only a couple of ranges) and I've been told that the club fitting service is a bit specialised (and my experience of the level of expertise of the people in the major stores is that it can be bit hit and miss as to whether you get someone who really knows what he's talking about as opposed to someone who's just done the training course).

So, I think I'll be cheeky and go for the compromise of the two suggestions ie down to American Golf to check out lots of clubs, then once I've decided which ones feel right for me I'll then buy them from someone who has the expertise of a golf pro (so he can analyse my swing) and who has the swing analysis software - that combination should get me the clubs I want 'bent' just for me by a pro who understands my swing and can put that into the mix with what the software is telling him.

Does that sound okay?
