I've come across this device that is a portable launch monitor.

Now for the golfer who has everything this could be the next item on his 'Wish List'

It costs £199.99

Maybe I could talk my pro into getting one and then he could hire it out to people who want to use it during their practice session.

More details here:  http://www.i-ongolf.com

If that's a launch monitor, then I'm a tour pro. It's calculating carry based on ball speed (it must be because the instructions say you can use it in a net) and is therefore essentially taking an educated guess. Also, the unit has to be positioned in prime position to get hit by a shank and, rather oddly, the display faces away from you.

You can get a swing speed radar for less than £70 (£100 with built in tempo timer). With a bit of carefull positioning it'll also measure ball speed. I got mine from 118Golf (www.118golf.co.uk/scripts/prodview.asp).

If you want an educated guess at how far you hit the ball www.csgnetwork.com/golfclubdistancecalce.html

ETA: the IonGolf is actually a Zelocity PureContact. The cheapest true launch monitor (i.e. it tracks the ball in flight) is the Zelocity PureFight (www.zelocity.com/golf/pureflight.shtml). Around £600 (from the US).

What a load of piffle, why waste your money on that rubbish. If you've got money to waste give it to me, I'll spend it on something sensible, like beer!!!!
