I watched the British open with great interest & excitement, especially the last day. The best case scenarios for me would have been an Englishman to win outright, then a play off with as many English as you like & Tom Watson, with an English player just winning on the 18th. Then a play off with Tom & any other player, with Tom getting it on the 18th. Worst case Scenario Tom in play off with another American & losing it horribly because he is 59 (I think that's the age they mentioned 3000 times!)and used up all his physical & mental energy, during 4 long windy days & had nothing left for the play off! Oh well you can't always have what you want in life I also can't believe Mr Alliss missed the opportunity to say " Cink just needs a Tap to win the 2009 British Open" !!

Yes, excellent championship with very disappointing (and sad) finish.

So many 'what ifs' and 'if onlys'. If Watson hadn't only needed a par on the 18th to win Westwood wouldn't have been so aggressive on the 18th - desparate for the birdie he got himself a bogey - only later realising that  a par would have got him into the play-off. If only...

If Watson hadn't tried to finish with a birdie he could have played to the middle of the 18th green giving him 2 putts for victory.

Still, what a gentleman, even at the very end when he knew it was all over (but it wasn't ending quickly enough) Watson was joking with the crowd and the marshalls. A great man
